The days of watching Miguel Herrera react like a madman on the sideline as the coach of Mexico's men's national team are over. On Tuesday, the Mexican Football Federation fired Herrera, two days after Mexico won the Gold Cup.

The decision to dismiss Herrera came days after he allegedly punched a journalist at Philadelphia International Airport.

"After listening to all my colleagues, I have made the decision to take Miguel Herrera out of the national team,"  said Mexican federation president Decio de Maria. "It is not a simple decision, but it is the correct one.

"Matches never finish, and as public figures we have to keep that in mind. Everyone has had an opinion, but our values have to be kept, and no one can be above the type of situation we saw on Monday at the Philadelphia airport."

After Mexico won the Gold Cup with a 3-1 win against Jamaica on Sunday, Christian Martinoli of TV Azteca told AS Mexico that Herrera punched him in the neck and challenged him to a fight at the airport on Monday. Apparently, Martinoli had criticized the coach during the Gold Cup.

"Everyone will have his version of events," Martinoli said, according to The Guardian, "and he probably will deny it. I have no doubt."

Despite winning the Gold Cup, Mexico struggled during the tournament, only winning one group stage game, and advancing to the finals thanks to some highly controversial penalty kicks. Now, Herrera is out as Mexico's coach and he will need to be replaced soon, as Mexico is set to battle the US men's national team in the fall for a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup.
