Three reasons why Ovince St. Preux can beat Jon Jones at UFC 197
Ovince St. Preux may not be getting a lot of respect from Vegas in his fight with Jon Jones, but always beware a fighter with knockout power.
Ovince St. Preux will step into the Octagon on Saturday looking to become the third non-superstar to take out one of the UFC’s three best fighters. The Miami native has a chance to shock the world in his bout with Jon Jones and here’s exactly how he can accomplish that goal.
Creative Striking Angles. St. Preux came into the fight game later than the average fighter and because of this, his technique is not as crisp as some of the veterans. OSP makes up for the lack of technique with different, unique striking angles. He uses looping punches to attack his opponent. It is already difficult for some fighters to judge a southpaw and St. Preux makes it even more difficult with how he understands and utilizes all of this to his advantage.
Striking Power. Always be aware of the striking power that St. Preux possesses. He is comfortable enough in his striking game to throw haymakers at any chance he can get. Not only are his punches coming from a southpaw stance, but his legs kicks can be more devastating. His kicking power became very eminent when he broke Ryan Jimmo’s arm with one of them.
Take Advantage of Ring Rust. OSP is a relentless striker. He starts the fight off in flurries, really getting to his opponent. Jon Jones has not fought since January 2015. Since then, St. Preux has fought three times with one of those fights being in February of this year. He needs to take advantage of Jones’ ring rust because when a fighter has that long of a layoff, it will show itself early. Jones is arguably the best fighter of all time, but that does not mean that he will not suffer from any rust. St. Preux has to find a way to get to Jones early in this fight if he wants to win.
