Micahel Phelps has signed a long-term contract with a company whose only water product is a black-and-white striped umbrella

That's right. The 22-time Olympic medalist is hitching his wagon to the good folks at PING for the time being.

According to GolfWeek, Phelps will use PING clubs in Pro-Am events as well as on the Haney Project, which will debut on the Golf Channel in February:

In announcing the signing, the Phoenix-based clubmaker said Phelps, 27, is making the transition from gold-medalist swimmer to golfer and hopes the combination of instruction and new equipment will help him excel.

Here's a picture of the custom-fitted (Phelps is 6-foot-4) clubs.

Phelps seems pretty pumped about the proposition of becoming a scratch golfer:

I know how difficult the game of golf is, but I’m really serious about getting better, and the experts at Ping have already helped me a lot.

His playing partner for Wednesday's Pro-Am at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Bubba Watson, thinks he needs to work a little harder. When asked about the best part of Phelps' game, Watson said:

That he's done with 18 holes.

Here's a video of Phelps swinging it at the famous hole No. 16 at TPC Scottsdale.
