The Athletics have renewed the contract of third baseman Josh Donaldson for 2014 at a league-minimum salary of $500,000, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports. Last season, Donaldson made $492,500, which was just a bit above the then-minimum figure of $490,000.

Heyman has learned that the A's initially offered a bit more than the minimum for 2014, but when Donaldson declined they renewed at $500,000. Since Donaldson doesn't yet have enough service time for arbitration-eligibility, that's the team's right under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Donaldson, age 28, is coming off a 2013 season in which he batted .301/.384/.499 (148 OPS+) with 24 homers and 37 doubles, in addition to providing exceptional defense at the hot corner. For his efforts, Donaldson finished fourth in the AL MVP vote.
