Cody Ransom is in line for plate appearances at third base in the wake of Logan Forsythe's foot injury. Forsythe was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis Thursday and is out at least six weeks.
The Padres will start the season using Ransom, Jedd Gyorko and Alexi Amarista to cover second and third base as a result. Ransom will likely get starts against left-handed pitchers.
Ransom showed some decent power between Arizona and Milwaukee last year, as he hit 11 home runs in just 282 plate appearances. He does qualify at shortstop, which may make him an enticing option for NL-only players, but as the short side of the platoon he's unlikely to get the plate appearances to justify a pickup in even most deep leagues.
