Here's Robinson as a member of the Kansas City Monarchs, the legendary Negro Leagues team, in 1943 (Getty).

Needless to say, it grabbed headlines when Robinson was called up to Brooklyn in April of '47 (NY Daily News).

It was rarely easy for Robinson. Here he is moments after being viciously beaned during the 1949 season (Getty).

Robinson was one of the last Dodgers left on the field after Bobby Thomson of the Giants hit the "Shot Heard 'Round the World." As the story goes, Robinson wanted to make sure that Thomson touched all the bases amid the mounting chaos (Getty).
