Cubs closer Jose Veras was tasked with picking up a save in the 12th inning Wednesday but gave up a game-tying run on one hit and two walks while striking out one in his team's 4-3 loss to the Pirates.
Veras also hit a batter with a pitch, but he was able to strike Andrew McCutchen out to strand the bases loaded and avoid taking a loss. Veras likely isn't going to lose his closing role after one blown save, but he doesn't have a lot of leeway as a new closer with a new team.
