Robinson Cano of the Yankees and David Wright of the Mets have been named captains of the 2013 Home Run Derby, MLB has announced. The two New York stars will participate in the event at Citi Field next month.
Cano captained the AL squad last year after winning the event in 2011. He drew major criticism from fans in Kansas City for not selecting a Royal (Billy Butler, specifically) for the event, which took place in KC's Kauffman Stadium. He won't have that problem this year with Wright captaining the NL team.
The two captains will ask their fellow league-mates to participate in the Derby in the coming weeks. Chris Davis (20 HR), Miguel Cabrera (18) and Edwin Encarnacion (17) seem like decent bets to join Cano while Wright could call on Domonic Brown (19), Carlos Gonzalez (17) and Paul Goldschmidt (15), among others.
