The New York Mets announced right-hander Matt Harvey had been suspended three games for violating team rules Sunday. Both general manager Sandy Alderson and manager Terry Collins declined to provide details.

According to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports, Harvey was suspended because he failed to report to the ballpark Saturday. He played golf that morning and got a headache. From Heyman:

Harvey didn't go to the ballpark Saturday, and apparently that is behind the suspension, though the Mets aren't saying the reason for the absence or the ban. Harvey sees it as a miscommunication, according to sources, as people close to him say he played golf early Saturday, got a headache when he returned home around 1 p.m., and advised the Mets of this issue.

Heyman adds that Harvey and agent Scott Boras will file a grievance. Harvey loses pay and possibly service time during the three-game ban.

Players, especially starting pitchers on the days between starts, play golf in the morning before night games all the time. Whether you think it's appropriate is besides the point. It happens plenty, and not just with Harvey and the Mets. Every team.

Now, not showing up to the park because of a headache is another matter. Clearly the Mets believe they were not properly informed Harvey would miss Saturday's game, otherwise they wouldn't have suspended him and used a spot starter in his place Sunday.
