  • Mets' Trevor Cahill: Inks minor-league deal

Cahill (foot) agreed to a minor-league contract with the Mets on Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The 34-year-old missed the final two months of last season while recovering from several fractures and torn ligaments in his right foot, and he was unable to land with a team during the offseason. Prior to the injury, Cahill appeared in nine games for the Pirates in 2021 and had a 6.57 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB over 37 innings. He could eventually provide rotation depth with Jacob deGrom (shoulder), Max Scherzer (oblique) and Tylor Megill (biceps) all currently sidelined with injuries.

Cahill (calf/foot) was re-examined recently and found to have several fractures and torn ligaments in his right foot, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that the right-hander won't resume baseball activities for 8-to-12 weeks, so he should be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Cahill also missed significant time earlier in the year due to a calf injury, and he recorded a 6.57 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 37 innings across nine appearances (eight starts) in 2021.

  • Pirates' Trevor Cahill: Resumes running

Cahill has been on the injured list since June 12, and he's been progressing slowly in his rehab process so far. While the right-hander hasn't yet resumed throwing, it's encouraging to see him running. The Pirates haven't yet indicated when he could return to game action, but a better timetable could be revealed once he begins a throwing program.

  • Pirates' Trevor Cahill: Still receiving treatment

Cahill (calf) is still receiving treatment and hasn't yet resumed throwing, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Cahill was placed on the 10-day injured list June 12 after he aggravated his left calf strain, and the team has been bringing him along slowly. A better idea of his return timetable could be revealed once he starts throwing again, but the Pirates figure to exercise plenty of caution since the right-hander suffered his setback very shortly after he was reinstated from the injured list June 10.

  • Pirates' Trevor Cahill: Dealing with aggravation of calf

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk confirmed Wednesday that Cahill was placed on the 10-day injured list over the weekend after aggravating his left calf strain, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

The same injury kept Cahill on the shelf for nearly three weeks before he returned to action June 10. He was active for only two days before suffering the setback, and given the recurring nature of his injury, Cahill could be looking at a longer recovery period this time around. Even before Cahill aggravated the calf injury, the Pirates had already pulled the plug on him as a starter and shifted him to a long-relief role, so he'll likely work out of the bullpen once activated.

  • Pirates' Trevor Cahill: Bullpen role confirmed

Pirates manager Derek Shelton confirmed after Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Dodgers that Cahill will work out of the bullpen for the "immediate future," Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.

Pittsburgh appears content to proceed with Chase De Jong as its fifth starter for the time being, so the team won't have a rotation spot available for Cahill, who returned from a three-week stay on the injured list earlier Thursday. Shelton said he wouldn't rule Cahill out from rejoining the rotation at some point, but it will likely take an injury or poor performance from another starter before the 33-year-old gets an opportunity.
