AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell1H agoThe Padres scored three runs in the seventh on various SF miscues -- a wild pitch and a routine pop-up that was dropped. They trail 7-4, but with an off-day tomorrow, they're chasing the game, using Jason Adam for the eighth.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell2H agoAfter the Padres batted for McCoy, it's not Tyler Wade at shortstop. It's Xander Bogaerts -- with Solano at first and Cronenworth sliding to second. The Padres had said this was something they'd try to avoid. But, well, they're going to need offense today.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell2H agoJackson Merrill just hit his 23rd home run, cutting the Padres' deficit to 6-1. Only Hunter Renfroe (26) and Nate Colbert (24) ever hit more as Padres rookies. Meantime, Mike Shildt just batted for McCoy with Solano in the fifth, so clearly he senses some sort of opportunity.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell3H agoJoe Musgrove went nine up nine down against the Giants through three. He's allowed six runs while only recording one out in the fourth. The Padres trail 6-0.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell17H agoThe Padres are better *with* Tatis and Merrill. (Not exactly revelatory.) Perhaps naturally, those absences proved costly tonight. https://t.co/RsMUg2AFvL

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell21H agoFinal: Giants 6, Padres 3 Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill were both out of the lineup, and needless to say, the Padres have a better offense when two of the best OFs in baseball are in it. Still, a costly loss on a night SD could've picked up a game on both ARI and ATL.
-
AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell21H agoThe Padres trail 4-3 headed to the ninth, meaning, if they can hold it at one run in the top half, we're going to find out about the true availabilities of Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the bottom half, with 7-8-9 due up.
