  • Avisail Garcia: Cut loose by Miami

The Marlins released Garcia on Sunday. As expected, the Marlins will absorb all the money remaining on the four-year, $53 million deal Garcia signed in November 2021 after no other team was willing to put in a waiver claim for the 32-year-old outfielder, who was cut by Miami last week. Now that he's a free agent, Garcia could attract some interest on a low-cost, one-year deal, but he may not have a clear path to an everyday role no matter where he lands. While operating in a reserve role with the Marlins for most of the season, Garcia slashed .240/.255/.380 over 51 plate appearances.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: DFA'd by Miami

The Marlins activated Garcia (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday and designated him for assignment, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Garcia is in the third year of a four-year, $53 million contract and the Marlins have elected to eat the nearly $24 million remaining on that deal. Slated to turn 33 years old next week, Garcia has delivered a lowly .217/.260/.322 slash line over 153 games during his three seasons with Miami. He will clear waivers and eventually be released, at which point another team will be able to sign Garcia for the prorated veteran minimum.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Starting rehab assignment

Garcia (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garcia is slated to play seven innings in what will be his first game action in a month. He seems likely to need a good number of rehab games before being activated, and Garcia's role upon his return appears cloudy.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Could begin rehab stint soon

Garcia (hamstring) is taking part in full baseball activities and will be evaluated for a return to game action in the next few days, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The outfielder last appeared in a game April 27, so he could need an extended rehab assignment before being activated from the IL. Garcia was slashing a meager .240/.255/.380 over 51 plate appearances when he landed on the shelf, and the 32-year-old's hamstring issues have become chronic -- he's spent time on the injured list due to a left hamstring strain in each of the last three seasons.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Full baseball activities

Garcia (hamstring) has progressed to full baseball activities, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. It's been nearly three weeks since Garcia landed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. He would appear close to starting a rehab assignment, with a return before the end of May possible.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Heads to injured list

The Marlins placed Garcia on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain. The veteran outfielder presumably suffered the injury Saturday against the Nationals, as he went 1-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced by a pinch hitter. The severity of the injury is unclear, but Garcia will be sidelined until at least May 8. Outfielder Dane Myers was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Swats solo homer

Garcia went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Monday's 4-3 loss to the Giants. Garcia notched his second home run of the campaign Monday but was unable to collect his first multi-hit game of 2024. The outfielder has generated a hit in five of his last six games but owns a .200/.220/.375 slash line through 14 appearances.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Clubs first homer of 2024

Garcia went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Pirates. Getting the start in right field and batting seventh, Garcia launched a Bailey Falter splitter up in the zone deep to right-center field, giving Miami a 6-4 lead in the fourth inning that the bullpen couldn't protect. Garcia has started two of the Marlins' first four games, all in right field, and gone 2-for-12 with four strikeouts. Sunday's home run has accounted for his only extra-base hit or RBI.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Rough start to spring

Garcia is batting .179 (5-for-28) through 10 Grapefruit League games with one double and a 2:10 BB:K. After an injury-plagued 2023 that saw him play only 37 games and stumble to a .185/.241/.315 slash line with a 33.6 percent strikeout rate, Garcia came into camp healthy this spring but hasn't shown any kind of noticeable improvement at the plate. The Marlins are likely hoping the 32-year-old can regain the form that saw him slug 29 homers for the Brewers in 2021 and replace Jorge Soler in their DH slot, but at this point Garcia's looking like little more than a dart throw for fantasy purposes. With two years and $24 million left on his contract though, Miami isn't likely to cut bait on him completely just yet.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Begins hitting, running

Garcia (hamstring) has begun hitting and running progressions, MLB.com reports. Garcia's most recent trip to the injured list came back in late August due to a left hamstring strain. While he's begun to ramp things back up, it's not clear whether there's enough time left in the season for his return. Even if he does make it back this month, Garcia seems unlikely to have much of a role with the Marlins as the team fights for a playoff berth.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Lands on 10-day IL

The Marlins placed Garcia (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Garcia's move to the IL comes as little surprise after he was diagnosed with a strained left hamstring upon exiting in the third inning of Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Padres. The 31-year-old has been playing sparingly over the past couple of weeks and already missed time in April due to an injury to the same hamstring, so fantasy managers in the majority of leagues can feel free to cut bait with Garcia now that he's back on the IL again.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Diagnosed with hamstring strain

Garcia suffered a left hamstring strain in Tuesday's game against the Padres, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Garcia exited the game after suffering the injury while running to first base. There hasn't been an official roster move, though the diagnosis suggests that there's a strong possibility of Garcia being placed on the injured list. Bryan De La Cruz should get more consistent playing time if Garcia is forced to miss additional time.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Exits Tuesday's game

Garcia exited Thursday's game against the Padres with an apparent hip or hamstring injury, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Garcia was running to first base when he appeared to suffer the injury. He exited with trainers, though the severity and exact nature of the issue remains unclear. Bryan De La Cruz took over for Garcia in left field.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Nabs steal in loss

Garcia went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in a 3-1 loss to the Dodgers in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. Garcia wasn't in the lineup for the matinee, but he played the full nightcap in left field with Bryan De La Cruz sitting versus southpaw Julio Urias. The steal was Garcia's second of the year. The veteran outfielder has been mostly limited to a short-side platoon role since returning from a back injury in late July. He's slashing just .190/.248/.324 with three home runs, 11 RBI, eight runs scored and three doubles over 113 plate appearances this season.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Not starting Saturday

Garcia is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rangers, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Garcia has gone 5-for-16 with a triple, a double, three RBI and two runs since returning from the injured list last weekend, and he'll take a seat Saturday for the second time in Miami's past three games. Jesus Sanchez will start in right field and bat seventh.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: On bench Thursday

Garcia is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies. Bryan De La Cruz, Jazz Chisholm and Jesus Sanchez will start across the outfield as the Marlins take on new Phillies right-hander Michael Lorenzen. Garcia has slashed just .191/.261/.349 in 71 plate appearances versus righties this season.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Returns from injured list

Garcia (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting in right field and batting fifth Sunday against the Tigers, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The veteran outfielder has been sidelined since late April due to the back issue but will rejoin Miami's lineup Sunday. Garcia had a .188/.243/.333 slash line in 22 games prior to the injury, though he hit well during his rehab assignment, going 8-for-29 with three doubles, three homers and seven walks in nine games. Dane Myers was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville to free up a roster spot.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Moves rehab assignment to Triple-A

Garcia (back) has gone 3-for-7 with a home run, a double and a walk in two games since shifting his rehab assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday. Garcia started up the assignment with Double-A Pensacola on July 18 and looks to be nearing a return from the 10-day injured list. Though he had been a near-everyday player in the Miami outfield prior to landing on the IL on May 2 due to back tightness, Garcia could have to settle for more of a part-time role once activated with Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez (neck) having since emerged as the Marlins' primary starters in left and right field, respectively.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Starts rehab assignment up again

Garcia (back) will restart a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Pensacola, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Garcia is slated to serve as the Blue Wahoos' designated hitter and receive three plate appearances. The veteran outfielder has been sidelined since late April with back tightness and encountered a setback on his initial rehab assignment in early June. Given their needs, it's possible the Marlins might ask Garcia to play some center field upon his return, although Dane Myers has done a fine job filling in there since Jazz Chisholm (oblique) landed on the shelf.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: Takes BP

Garcia (back) took batting practice Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. According to MLB.com, Garcia was able to participate in batting practice July 7, so he hasn't yet taken a meaningful step forward in terms of activity coming out of the All-Star break. The outfielder has been shelved since late April with back tightness, but he was able to appear in four rehab games from May 29 through June 2 before experiencing a setback and being shut down. While it's encouraging that Garcia is swinging the bat again, he hasn't been cleared to restart a rehab assignment yet, and he'll likely need several games in the minors to get his timing back at the plate before the Marlins are comfortable with activating him from the 10-day injured list.
