  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Designated for assignment

Alcantara was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Alcantara played in 93 games between Arizona and San Diego last season and struggled at the plate with a .617 OPS. He was removed from the 40-man roster in order to free up space for prospects ahead of the Rule 5 draft.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Settling into regular role

Alcantara will start at third base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Brewers. With Ketel Marte landing on the injured list Friday, Alcantara looks poised to finish the season in a near-everyday role in the Arizona infield. Alcantara will pick up his third consecutive start Monday after going 2-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI over the weekend during Arizona's series with San Francisco.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Slugs walkoff homer

Alcantara hit a walkoff three-run home run in his only at-bat during Wednesday's 5-3 victory versus the Dodgers. Alcantara didn't start the contest, but he was brought into the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. He got a chance to make his mark at the plate against Los Angeles closer Craig Kimbrel with Arizona down by a run in a two-out, two-on situation in the bottom of the 10th frame. Alcantara came through with a blast to right field to give the Diamondbacks the win. It was his fifth homer of the campaign, tying his total from last season.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Hits fourth homer

Alcantara went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in a 3-2 victory over the White Sox on Sunday. Alcantara helped power his team to victory with a solo shot off Dylan Cease. It was one of only two hits that the Diamondbacks managed in eight innings against the right-hander. Alcantara now has four home runs and is slashing a paltry .211/.256/.340 in a backup role this year. He has never previously hit more than five home runs in a season.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Returns to bench role

Alcantara is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Alcantara finds himself as the odd man out of the starting nine with Ketel Marte (hamstring) returning from a six-game absence to serve as Arizona's designated hitter. While picking up starts at third base in each of the past three contests, Alcantara went 2-for-10 with two doubles, a walk, three runs and an RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Loses playing time with Marte at 2B

Alcantara is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants. Alcantara had picked up starts in the infield in three of the Diamondbacks' previous four games, but he's likely to fade into more of a part-time role now that Ketel Marte has been cleared to resume playing second base. The Diamondbacks still have a surplus of left-handed bats on the roster, so the switch-hitting Alcantara could maintain a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Not in Saturday's lineup

Alcantara isn't starting Saturday's game against the Nationals. Alcantara started Friday against Washington but went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He'll take a seat since Ketel Marte is starting at second base while Jake McCarthy serves as the designated hitter Saturday.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Heads to bench

Alcantara isn't starting Saturday against the Padres. Alcantara has alternated starts over the last week and has gone 6-for-16 with a homer, a double, three RBI and four strikeouts. He'll head to the bench while Buddy Kennedy starts at the keystone and bats seventh.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Retreats to bench

Alcantara isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Giants. Alcantara is out of the lineup for the third time in the last six games after he went 6-for-12 with a homer, a double, three RBI and two strikeouts over his last five matchups. Buddy Kennedy is starting at the keystone and batting sixth.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Racks up three hits in loss

Alcantara went 3-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's 13-0 loss to the Giants. The Diamondbacks weren't able to string many hits together, but Alcantara was a bright spot in a brutal loss. He's gone 6-for-12 (.500) with a home run, three RBI and a run scored in six games since rejoining Arizona off waivers from San Diego earlier in July. The infielder is slashing .200/.219/.310 with two homers, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored and three doubles through 107 plate appearances. He's seen an uptick in playing time at second base, but that may be short-lived as Ketel Marte is expected to play the field again soon.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Pops homer in loss

Alcantara went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Rockies. Alcantara hit a two-run blast in the second inning to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead. This was his first hit in two contests since he rejoined Arizona after being waived by the Padres. He's posted a lackluster .163/.186/.272 slash line with two home runs, 12 RBI, 10 runs scored, two doubles and a triple through 99 plate appearances. Considering his homer Friday was his first hit since June 17, he shouldn't be expected to do much when he's in the lineup.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Back with Arizona

Alcantara was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The 25-year-old began the season with Arizona before being claimed off waivers by San Diego in early May, but he'll now rejoin the Diamondbacks after being designated for assignment by the Padres. Alcantara has appeared in 45 games between the two clubs this year and is hitting .159/.183/.239 with one home run and 10 RBI.

  • Padres' Sergio Alcantara: Draws rare start versus former team

Alcantara will start at shortstop and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Cubs, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. With Ha-Seong Kim resting for the day game after a night game, Alcantara will crack the lineup for only the sixth time since the Padres claimed him off waivers from the Diamondbacks on May 9. Due to the Friars cruising to a 19-5 win Wednesday, manager Bob Melvin was able to pull multiple regulars early from the contest, which allowed Alcantara to go 1-for-2 with an RBI while coming off the bench.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Designated for assignment

Alcantara was designated for assignment Friday. The utility infielder hit .189/.200/.321 with one home run, 13 strikeouts and one walk in 57 plate appearances. Josh Rojas was activated from the injured list to take on a significant role in the infield.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Stays in 3B mix

Alcantara started at third base and went 1-for-2 with a double in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Cardinals. Alcantara remains in the mix at third base along with prospect Geraldo Perdomo, but he made his fourth fielding error of the season. With Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reporting that Josh Rojas (oblique) may not be ready to rejoin the major-league club for the series against the Marlins beginning Monday, Alcantara's roster spot appears to be safe for at least the first half of this coming week's slate of games.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Not in Thursday's lineup

Alcantara isn't starting Thursday against the Cardinals. Alcantara started in the last two games and went 0-for-5 with a run and two strikeouts. He'll get a breather while Geraldo Perdomo starts at the hot corner and bats ninth.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Not starting Monday

Alcantara isn't starting Monday against the Dodgers. Even though right-hander Walker Buehler is starting for the Dodgers on Monday, Alcantara will get a breather after he went 2-for-8 with a run and two strikeouts in the last two games. Geraldo Perdomo will start at the hot corner and bat ninth.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Not in Friday's lineup

Alcantara isn't starting Friday's game against the Mets. Alcantara has started exclusively against right-handed pitchers this year, and he'll be out of the lineup for the third time in the last four games since left-hander David Peterson is starting for the Mets. Matt Davidson will start at the hot corner and bat third.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Not in Thursday's lineup

Alcantara isn't starting Thursday's game against Washington. Alcantara has hit just .095 with a homer, a double, four RBI and three runs in 11 appearances this year, and he'll be on the bench for the third time in the last five games. Matt Davidson will start at the hot corner and bat third.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Fills in at SS

Alcantara started at shortstop and went 0-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 11-2 win over Washington. Rookie Geraldo Perdomo has received the bulk of playing time at shortstop with Nick Ahmed (shoulder) opening the season in the IL, but the prospect is grinding through a 1-for-22 (.045) stretch. That leaves him vulnerable to a replacement like Alcantara, who is not doing much better at 2-for-21 (.095). The latest on Ahmed is that he's picked up activity and could return during a six-game homestand that kicks off Friday.
