  • Jose Osuna: Released by Pirates

Osuna was released by the Pirates on Tuesday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Osuna went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment Friday. He's expected to sign with a team in Asia, which could be a good fit for a player whose career .241/.280/.430 slash line in 705 career big-league plate appearances isn't terrible but isn't good enough for a corner infielder or outfielder at the highest level.

Osuna is not in Thursday's lineup against the Cubs. He had started six straight games, batting .188 with one home run over that stretch. The Pirates want to get prospect Jared Oliva regular playing time over the final week, and Oliva will be manning left field while batting seventh in this one.

  • Pirates' Jose Osuna: Ready for outfield duty

Osuna will start in right field and bat sixth Sunday in St. Louis. He went 2-for-4 with a double Friday, scoring a pair of runs. Osuna has faced Cardinals starter Dakota Hudson only one time, collecting an RBI single. While Osuna is not a plus-defender in the outfield, he could earn added playing time if he shows a strong bat, especially with Gregory Polanco (illness) out for another week or so.

  • Pirates' Jose Osuna: Will be in Saturday's lineup

Osuna will bat fifth and serve as the designated hitter Saturday against Cleveland. The 27-year-old hit 10 homers in 285 plate appearances last season, with six of the long balls coming off the bench. Osuna batted .317 through mid-August mostly as a reserve player, but slumped to .217 in 35 starts from Aug. 20 to season's end. There's little question that 2020 represents a huge opportunity for Osuna. He's the team's best defender at first base and should see more action with the addition of the designated hitter.
