  • Mets' Wuilmer Becerra: Limited to DH duties thus far

Becerra (shoulder) has appeared in seven games this spring as the designated hitter, going 2-for-9 with a double and an RBI.

The young outfield prospect has yet to appear in the field this spring, but it seems that his ailing shoulder is not enough to keep him from batting. It's good to see that he's able to do some baseball activities with the big league club, although a timetable for his return to the field is still unclear at this point. Becerra does have four strikeouts in those nine at-bats, so he'll likely head back to the lower minors to develop more once spring training concludes.

  • Mets' Wuilmer Becerra: Not yet throwing

Becerra is at least a month away from throwing a baseball as he continues his recovery from last July's labrum surgery on his right shoulder, The New York Post reports.

Injuries have slowed the 22-year-old's development -- his career high so far in games played is 118 at Low-A in 2015 -- and if the shoulder surgery affects his arm strength going forward, he may have to shift to left field. Even so, the Mets are still hopeful Becerra will make a full recovery and start showing the in-game power his 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame suggests he should have. After being added to the 40-man roster in the offseason, he'll need to start making some real progress in 2017 if he wants to stay in the organization's future plans.

  • Mets' Wuilmer Becerra: Added to 40-man roster

Becerra (shoulder) was added to the Mets' 40-man roster on Friday, ESPN's Adam Rubin reports.

The Mets protected Becerra from the Rule 5 draft, as expected. He missed most of the second half of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery to repair a partially torn labrum and the hope is that he will be ready for spring training. Becerra is a bat-first corner outfielder whose in-game power has not shown up in the way most evaluators hoped it would. If he qualified, his .312 average would have finished second in the Florida State League, but he hit just one home run in 65 games. The shoulder injury could lead to suppressed power numbers again in 2017.

  • Mets' Wuilmer Becerra: Continues to hit well

Becerra is hitting .415/.456/.479 for High-A St. Lucie.

Becerra, who came over the R.A. Dickey deal that keeps on giving for the Mets, had a breakout 2015 capping for Low-a Savannah. He has built off that fine season at a higher level though the power has yet to come. Becerra could develop into a nice-power/speed combination for the Mets, and at 21, still has room to grow.
