Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Sitting in fourth straight
Rortvedt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.
Rortvedt will be on the bench for the fourth game in a row and is unlikely to be anything more than the Yankees' No. 3 catcher over the final month of the season after New York called up prospect Austin Wells from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. Wells will make his third straight start Sunday and is expected to get a long look as the team's top backstop down the stretch. Since receiving a call-up of his own from Triple-A on July 21, Rortvedt has slashed an abysmal .087/.192/.217 over 22 games.

Rortvedt is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers.
Rortvedt will take a seat for the second straight day while the Yankees reward Kyle Higashioka with another turn behind the dish after he slugged a home run in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Rays. Expect the Yankees to deploy Rortvedt and Higashioka in a roughly even timeshare as the season winds down.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Homers Tuesday
Rortvedt went 2-for-2 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss against the Nationals.
Rortvedt was responsible for the Yankees' lone run in the 2-1 loss with a solo homer off Josiah Gray in the third inning, his second long ball of the season. The 25-year-old Rortvedt has seen the majority of the playing time behind the plate in New York recently, despite going just 1-for-22 in 11 contests prior to Tuesday's matchup. Overall, he's slashing just .136/.255/.295 with four runs scored and three RBI across 51 plate appearances this season.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: On bench Wednesday
Rortvedt is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Nationals.
Kyle Higashioka will start behind the plate and bat eighth versus the Nationals and left-hander MacKenzie Gore. Rortvedt has been drawing the majority of the playing time at catcher in recent weeks, but he carries a weak .136/.255/.295 overall slash line for the year.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Heads to bench Sunday
Rortvedt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.
Rortvedt will take a seat for the series finale after starting in three of the past four games behind the dish. The 25-year-old might have the edge on playing time over Kyle Higashioka behind the plate at the moment, but any advantage Rortvedt might have is likely thin. Rortvedt is batting .059 in 15 games since being recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 21.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Clubs first homer for Yanks
Rortvedt went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-7 loss against the Marlins.
The sixth-inning blast was his first with the Yankees. This was Rortvedt's first start in four games, though he had started five of the previous seven contests. Rortvedt has an opportunity to continue to push Kyle Higashioka for playing time, especially if Rortvedt shows he can provide some offensive punch.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Gets fourth start in six games
Rortvedt will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the White Sox.
Rortvedt is behind the plate for the fourth time in six games and may have inched ahead of Kyle Higashioka on the depth chart at catcher. Since getting called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 21, Rortvedt has drawn walks at a 15 percent clip, but he's managed just one hit in 17 at-bats.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Back in big leagues
Rortvedt was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
Rortvedt will return to the major-league roster after being sent down May 30, as Jose Trevino (wrist) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday. Rortvedt has produced a solid .276 batting average with six homers, 23 RBI, 19 runs and two stolen bases over 105 at-bats in 29 games with Triple-A, but it's not clear how much playing time he might get behind Kyle Higashioka.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Optioned to Triple-A
The Yankees optioned Rortvedt to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, Randy Miller of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Rortvedt is booted from the active roster to make room for Jose Trevino with Trevino coming off the 10-day injured list. In five games with the Yankees, Rortvedt went 2-for-7 while scoring a pair of runs. He'll head to Triple-A to provide emergency depth for the Yankees.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Tallies two hits in Yankees debut
Rortvedt went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs in a 10-inning win against the Reds on Saturday.
A series of injuries stalled Rortvedt from playing after New York acquired him in a trade with Minnesota last March, but he was finally able to make his first appearance as a Yankee on Saturday. The backstop's team debut was a success, as he doubled and scored in his first at-bat and crossed the plate again after singling in his second trip to the plate. Rortvedt will get a chance to make an impression while Jose Trevino (hamstring) is on the IL, and he could feasibly remain on the roster upon Trevino's return if he plays well over that period.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Set for debut with Yankees
Rortvedt is starting at catcher and batting ninth Saturday versus the Reds.
Rortvedt will make his debut with the Yankees after he was acquired via trade from the Twins in March of 2022. The 25-year-old has had a strong season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .324 with three homers, 10 RBI and four runs scored over 37 at-bats in 10 games. With Jose Trevino (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list, Rortvedt will split time behind the plate with Kyle Higashioka.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Recalled to MLB roster
The Yankees recalled Rortvedt from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Needing depth at catcher with Jose Trevino (hamstring) landing on the IL, the Yankees will give Rortvedt his first taste of MLB action since 2021. The oft-injured 25-year-old was off to a terrific start this season in the Yankees' minor-league system, slashing .327/.421/.612 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 14 games between Single-A, Double-A and Triple-A. He could share time behind the plate with Kyle Higashioka in Trevino's absence.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Activated and optioned
Rortvedt (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
Rortvedt was placed on the 10-day injured list in late March after he underwent left shoulder surgery in February, and he has been working his way back since. The catcher has yet to appear in a game for the Yankees after being acquired via trade from Minnesota in March of 2022. The 25-year-old will stick with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he went 3-for-17 with a double, an RBI and a run scored over five rehab contests.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Rehabbing at Triple-A
Rortvedt (shoulder) had his minor-league rehab assignment moved from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.
Since moving to Triple-A, Rortvedt has seen action in three contests, going 3-for-10 with a double, a run and an RBI. The catcher appears to finally be getting healthy after dealing with multiple injuries since being acquired by New York in March of last year. Rortvedt was initially expected to compete for a starting role but has yet to play in a regular-season contest for the big club.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Shifts rehab to Double-A
Rortvedt (shoulder) had his minor-league rehab assignment transferred from Single-A Tampa to Double-A Somerset on Friday.
Rortvedt played in three games for Tampa, going 3-for-11 with two doubles and two runs. The catcher came over to New York from Minnesota in a trade last March, but he's yet to make his Yankees debut. That's mostly due to injury -- Rortvedt dealt with separate knee and oblique issues that cost him most of last season, and he underwent surgery to address an aneurysm near his left shoulder in February of this year.

Yankees' Ben Rortvedt: Rehab assignment starting Friday
Rortvedt (shoulder) is set to start his rehab assignment with Single-A Tampa on Friday.
Rortvedt was forced to undergo surgery in February to address an aneurysm in his left shoulder, and he's missed the beginning of the season as a result. The catcher will now commence what will likely be a prolonged rehab assignment before he could potentially join the Yankees' major-league roster down the line. Rortvedt last appeared in the big leagues in 2021, producing a .169 batting average with three homers, seven RBI and eight runs scored over 89 at-bats in 39 games with the Twins as a rookie. Neither Jose Trevino nor Kyle Higashioka have been impressive at the plate in 2023, so Rortvedt is worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.

The Yankees placed Rortvedt (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Rortvedt required surgery for a left shoulder aneurysm back in February and is still getting back up to speed. He'll probably head to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre once he's activated from the IL.
