Oviedo (shoulder) was activated from Double-A Akron's injured list Sunday. Oviedo was out for about three weeks after sustaining an injury in his July 31 start versus Harrisburg. The right-hander should resume a starting role for Akron now that he's healthy again.... See More ... See Less

Guardians' Luis Oviedo: Lands on IL
Oviedo (shoulder) was placed on the injured list at Double-A Akron this week. Oviedo last pitched July 31, throwing two innings versus Harrisburg. He's compiled a lackluster 6.43 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 42:31 K:BB through 42 innings across 15 appearances with Akron after he was claimed on waivers from Pittsburgh in April.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Luis Oviedo: Clears waivers
Oviedo was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on May 22 after being designated for assignment. Though Oviedo no longer possesses a spot on the 40-man roster, he'll remain in the Guardians organization after going unclaimed on waivers. Since being claimed off waivers from the Pirates in late April, the 23-year-old righty has pitched exclusively at Double-A Akron, posting a 2.38 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 11.1 innings.... See More ... Guardians' Luis Oviedo: Designated for assignment
Oviedo was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Friday, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Oviedo was claimed off waivers from the Pirates in late April but remained stuck in the minors with his new organization. He owns a 2.03 ERA in 13.1 minor-league frames this season, but his 16.7 percent walk rate may mean he doesn't draw much attention on the waiver wire.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Luis Oviedo: Claimed by Cleveland
Oviedo was claimed off waivers by the Guardians on Tuesday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Oviedo was designated for assignment by the Pirates last week and will now join the Guardians. He appeared in 22 games for Pittsburgh in 2021 and struggled with a 8.80 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 31:26 K:BB over 29.2 innings. He'll likely report to the Double-A or Triple-A level with his new organization.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: DFA'd by Pittsburgh
Oviedo was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Thursday. Oviedo began the year on the injured list with an ankle injury and was optioned to Double-A Altoona when he was activated from the shelf on Monday. The 22-year-old has made three appearances (two starts) in the minors this year and has allowed a run in 2.2 innings. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll presumably remain in the organization.... Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Moves rehab to Double-A
Oviedo (ankle) will report to Double-A Altoona to continue his minor-league rehab assignment, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Oviedo appeared in two games with Low-A Bradenton over the past week and will now move up to Altoona to continue his rehab work. The 22-year-old is returning from a sprained right ankle and could be activated from the injured list after one or two appearances at Double-A.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Goes on IL
The Pirates placed Oviedo on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right ankle sprain, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Oviedo spent the final week of the 2021 season on the IL with a strained right shoulder, but it's a different injury that will keep him sidelined to begin the 2022 campaign. The 22-year-old right-hander didn't make any appearances during the Pirates' Grapefruit League schedule before he was moved to the IL. He'll likely be sidelined for longer than the minimum 10 days.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Shut down with shoulder strain
The Pirates placed Oviedo on the 10-day injured list earlier Monday due to a right shoulder strain, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Pittsburgh previously deactivated Oviedo prior to Monday's make-up game against Cincinnati without a specific injury attached to his name, but Stumpf's report indicates that the rookie reliever wasn't shut down for reasons related to COVID-19. Oviedo, a Rule 5 selection this past winter, will finish his first season in the big leagues with an 8.80 ERA and 1.99 WHIP across 29.2 innings. Assuming Pittsburgh elects to tender him a contract this offseason, Oviedo will likely report to Triple-A Indianapolis or Double-A Altoona to open the 2022 campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Lands on injured list
Oviedo was placed on the 10-day injured list with an undisclosed injury Monday. Undisclosed injuries this season have often been coronavirus-related, but that doesn't appear to be the case with Oviedo, as the team specified he was placed on the 10-day injured list. Whatever he's dealing with, he's evidently been dealing with it for some time, as he hasn't pitched in over two weeks. The Rule 5 draft pick will end his rookie season looking far from ready for the big leagues, as he'll finish with an 8.80 ERA and 1.99 WHIP in 29.2 innings. Kyle Keller was recalled to take his place on the roster.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Tagged for eight runs
Oviedo (1-2) was charged with the loss against the Brewers on Tuesday after surrendering eight runs (six earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out two batters across one inning. After scheduled starter Tyler Anderson was traded to Philadelphia on Tuesday, Oviedo filled in to make his first start of the season despite not pitching more than two innings in any of his 12 relief appearances. The Brewers took advantage, causing the right-hander to exit in the second inning after he allowed five runs to score without recording an out. With a 9.61 ERA and 2.08 WHIP across 19.2 frames this year, Oviedo can be ignored in most fantasy formats.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Resumes throwing
Oviedo (quadriceps) has resumed throwing on flat ground and the slope of the mound, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Oviedo landed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain Thursday, but he was able to start throwing again less than a week later. A better timetable for the right-hander's return could come into focus once he's cleared to throw a full bullpen session and resume running.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Placed on injured list
Oviedo was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain Thursday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Oviedo hasn't pitched since Sunday, and he's apparently been dealing with an injury that will force him to miss additional time. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to return. Right-hander Trevor Cahill (calf) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Earns win Friday
Oviedo (1-1) threw an inning in Friday's 3-2 win over the Giants, allowing an unearned run on one hit and a walk but earning the win. Oviedo was called upon to pitch in the 11th and allowed the Giants to retake the lead on a RBI single by Austin Slater. The Pirates were able to tack on two in the bottom half of the inning and escape with a victory, which allowed Oviedo to pick up his first career major-league win. Oviedo has endured massive struggles through his first eight appearances, surrendering 11 runs in 12.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Throws two clean innings
Oviedo allowed two walks and one hit in two scoreless innings of a 3-0 loss to St. Louis on Sunday. The Rule 5 pick pitched for the first time since April 15. In the two outings since he gave up five runs in 1.2 innings to San Diego on April 12, the team has used him in low-leverage situations. The organization has committed to pitching Oviedo sparingly. As a result, he likely won't offer much to fantasy managers in the short-run.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Roughed up Monday
Oviedo surrendered five earned runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of a 6-2 loss to San Diego on Monday. He failed to record a strikeout. The Rule 5 pickup currently offers a live fastball and hard-breaker slider but may need to add a slower breaking ball to improve his results. The team used him to start the sixth inning of a tie game, showing confidence in the 21-year-old, but based on the results, his next time out will likely be in a less stressful circumstance. He threw just 25 of 47 pitches for strikes against the Padres.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Impressive debut
Oviedo struck out one batter in a scoreless eighth inning Saturday against the Cubs. The Rule 5 pick mixed a mid-90s fastball with a low-80s offspeed pitch to keep the Cubs guessing. The 21-year-old, who had never pitched above High-A ball prior to Saturday, showed why the team acquired the former Cleveland pitcher from the Mets over the winter. He's expected to appear in low-leverage situations, at least until he gains a bit more experience in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Luis Oviedo: Shipped to Pittsburgh
Oviedo was traded from the Mets to the Pirates for a player to be named later or cash, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. The Mets selected Oviedo with the ninth pick in Thursday's Rule 5 draft and then quickly flipped him to the Pirates. Oviedo was once a top-200 prospect as a member of Cleveland's organization but has battled arm injuries and command issues in recent years. However, he was recently sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball in winter ball. Look for him to pitch out of the Pirates' bullpen in 2021.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Luis Oviedo: Scooped by Mets
The Mets selected Oviedo with the ninth pick of the Rule 5 draft. Oviedo has as much prospect pedigree as anyone selected in this year's Rule 5 draft. He used to be a very promising pitcher in the lower levels of Cleveland's farm system, but injuries and command issues have resulted in him falling off most prospect lists. He was recently touching the mid-90s with his fastball during winter ball and should work out of the bullpen in 2021.... See More ... See Less -
Indians' Luis Oviedo: Bounces back for Lake County
Oviedo gave up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings Thursday for Low-A Lake County. The big righty's ERA comes down to 4.70 as a result of this bounce-back performance, coming on the heels of last week's outing when he gave up five runs while recording just one out. He also has a six-run, two-out outing from April 15 on his ledger. Save for those two hiccups, Oviedo has been as advertised this year for the Captains.... See More ... See Less
