Player Outlook
Despite a strong spring training, Maikel Garcia opened the season with Triple-A Omaha. After posting a weak .242/.348/.347 line with the Storm Chasers, Garcia was summoned to the majors where he stayed the rest of the season. His game is hitting the ball hard on the ground with an 87th percentile average exit velocity and 6.1 degree launch angle. He mustered a low 84 wRC+, but Garcia swiped 23 bases. There is always the chance Garcia learns to loft the ball more, but as is he offers a solid batting average floor, with some speed. He batted leadoff in 72 of 123 games but is better suited for a spot lower in the order. He's miscast at third base, but with Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop, and no in-house challenger, Garcia is ticketed for another season at the hot corner. These aren't the ideal traits for a fantasy corner infielder, but Garcia can be useful in the right lineup construction, especially if he continues to hit at or near the top of the order.

Garcia went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 6-2 win over the Athletics. Garcia went deep as part of a five-run sixth inning that put the Royals in full control. The third baseman has hit safely in five straight games, adding two steals and four RBI in that span despite going a meager 5-for-22 (.227). Garcia's been held hitless in just three of 14 games in May, so he's still putting together decent at-bats despite not producing big numbers. The 24-year-old is slashing .238/.286/.381 with five homers, 28 RBI, 21 runs scored and 10 steals through 44 contests overall.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Records ninth steal

Garcia went 1-for-5 with a stolen base in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Angels. Garcia has hit safely in eight of 11 games in May, going 12-for-47 (.255) with four doubles, four RBI and five runs scored. His steal Sunday was his first of the month and his ninth of the season, and he's yet to be caught stealing. The third baseman is slashing .238/.290/.375 with four home runs, 24 RBI and 20 runs scored over 184 plate appearances. While Garcia hasn't profiled as an ideal leadoff hitter, he's done enough to keep that spot through the first quarter of the campaign in a fairly strong lineup.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Gets breather for Game 2

Garcia isn't in the Royals' lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Garcia went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, walk and three RBI en route to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles on Tuesday. Garcia hit a two-run double in the second inning to put Kansas City ahead 3-0, and he later added some insurance in the fourth with an RBI triple. The hard-hitting 24-year-old has offered plenty of production as the Royals' leadoff man to begin the season, and hitting in front of Bobby Witt only increases Garcia's fantasy value.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Hits leadoff home run

Garcia went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a strikeout during Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Twins. Garcia's home run came on the third pitch he saw, leading off the bottom of the first with a blast over the left-field wall. His homer was the only blemish on Pablo Lopez's line as the Twins hurler otherwise shut the door on Garcia and the rest of the Royals lineup. The third baseman parlayed a strong spring into a leadoff role and began the season with a long ball after hitting just four last season over 464 at-bats.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Could be leadoff hitter

Garcia is projected as the Royals' starting third baseman and a potential leadoff hitter, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Garcia has gone 4-for-9 with a stolen base over his first three Cactus League games. He enjoyed a solid first major-league campaign, batting .272 with a .681 OPS while adding 23 stolen bases, 50 RBI and 59 runs scored. The Royals' lineup looks a little beefed up compared to 2023, and another year of growth from the prospects could help Garcia be a valuable contact hitter and speed threat if he can remain atop the lineup.

  • Royals' Maikel Garcia: Dealing with rib inflammation

Garcia's recent absences have been due to costochondritis, an inflammation near his ribs, though the issue isn't believed to be serious, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports. Garcia missed a pair of games last weekend with a vaguely defined upper-body injury, and he's been absent for the first two games of this weekend's series at Wrigley Field for the same reason. The rookie infielder is feeling better and was reportedly available off the bench Saturday, per Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star, but he didn't wind up getting into the game in a 6-4 loss.

Garcia was removed from Friday's game against the Cubs due to upper body discomfort. Garcia dealt with an upper-body issue last weekend and missed two games. He was 0-for-2 in Friday's matinee tilt at Wrigley Field before Matt Duffy entered to replace him at third base in the bottom of the fourth inning. Garcia should be considered day-to-day until the Royals' medical staff has a better idea what the rookie is dealing with.
