  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Bullpen session on tap

Tarnok (shoulder) is slated to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. The right-hander continues to inch closer to a potential rehab assignment, with Tuesday's scheduled session coming in the wake of a live batting practice Saturday. Tarnok also got through a simulated game last Tuesday, so he may be deemed ready to jump into game action if the bullpen session goes well.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Throws live batting practice

Tarnok (shoulder) threw a live batting practice session Saturday, the team's official site reports. Tarnok is seemingly trending in the right direction, as he also threw a 20-pitch bullpen session May 26 and faced hitters in a simulated game Tuesday. The promising right-hander may be inching closer to a rehab assignment if he doesn't experience any residual effects from Saturday's activity.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Set for sim game Tuesday

Tarnok (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Tuesday, reports. After tossing a 20-pitch bullpen session Friday without issue, Tarnok will advance to the next phase of his rehab by facing hitters for the first time since he was shut down in early March with a right shoulder strain. Tarnok will likely need to complete at least one more simulated game after Tuesday's before the Athletics begin to map out what's expected to be an extended minor-league rehab assignment for the 24-year-old right-hander, whom Oakland acquired in December in a three-team deal with Atlanta and Milwaukee.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Won't require surgery

Tarnok (shoulder) will not require surgery and will begin a throwing program soon, Martin Gallegos of reports. Tarnok was placed on the injured list Thursday with a strain in his right shoulder. While still a troubling injury, he avoided the worst outcome and seems likely to be able to pitch again at some point during the 2023 season. An exact timeline remains unclear.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Dealing with arm issue

Tarnok hasn't pitched in a Cactus League game since March 8 due to right arm discomfort, Martin Gallegos of reports. Initial reports suggested it was a thumb issue Tarnok was dealing with, but apparently it's his pitching arm. He's undergoing tests and the Athletics should have a clearer idea of what's going on with the right-hander soon. Tarnok came over to the Athletics from Atlanta in the Sean Murphy trade. If healthy, he's likely to start 2023 at Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Athletics' Freddy Tarnok: Dealt to Oakland

The Athletics acquired Tarnok alongside Kyle Muller, Manny Pina, Royber Salinas and Esteury Ruiz in a three-way deal Monday which sent Sean Murphy and Joel Payamps to Atlanta and William Contreras and Justin Yeager to Milwaukee, Robert Murray of reports. Tarnok was one of the Braves' top prospects and will be one of Oakland's now. The right-handed pitcher posted a 3.68 ERA and 49:17 K:BB in 44 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett last season. He also made 15 appearances in Double-A and one game -- his big-league debut -- with Atlanta in August.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Moves back to minors

Atlanta optioned Tarnok to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday. One of the organization's top pitching prospects, Tarnok was summoned from Triple-A earlier this week despite having made only five starts for Gwinnett following his mid-July promotion from Double-A Mississippi. Atlanta was likely just keeping Tarnok on hand as an insurance option in case neither Max Fried (concussion) or Kyle Wright (arm) was able to start this week, but Fried will take the hill for Thursday's series finale with the Mets, while Wright will go Friday against Houston. Tarnok at least received the chance to make his MLB debut out of the bullpen Wednesday, working two-thirds of an inning and striking out a batter in Atlanta's 9-7 loss.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Gets call-up to majors

Atlanta recalled Tarnok from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. Tarnok becomes the third pitching prospect to join Atlanta within the past few days, after Kyle Muller and Bryce Elder were previously called up and then optioned back to Gwinnett following spot starts against the Marlins over the weekend. Atlanta hasn't immediately announced its plans for Tarnok, but if he isn't needed out of the bullpen Tuesday or Wednesday, he could be called upon to make a spot start Thursday against the Mets or Friday against the Astros if neither Max Fried (concussion) nor Kyle Wright (arm) is ready to make his next turn through the rotation. Between stops at Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi this season, the 23-year-old Tarnok has produced a 3.63 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 101 strikeouts over 89.1 innings.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Pitching Wednesday at Double-A

Tarnok will make his season debut for Double-A Mississippi on Wednesday against Biloxi. This is essentially just reassurance that Tarnok is healthy, despite the fact he has not pitched yet since being optioned to the minors. It was originally reported that Tarnok was sent to Triple-A, but he was reassigned to Double-A last week. He has a very high ceiling, particularly if he can improve his third-pitch changeup.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Beginning season at Triple-A

Tarnok was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. Tarnok was added to the 40-man roster and was in major-league camp as one of Atlanta's top prospects, but he'll now shift over to the minor-league side. The 23-year-old right-hander finished last season at Double-A Mississippi and posted a 2.60 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 61:15 K:BB over 45 innings (nine starts), and his big-league debut could be on tap in 2022 if he has a strong showing at the Triple-A level.

  • Braves' Freddy Tarnok: Contract selected Thursday

Tarnok's contract was selected by Atlanta on Thursday. Tarnok progressed to Double-A Mississippi in 2021 and logged a 2.60 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 45 innings across nine starts. His addition to the 40-man roster will protect him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft.
