  • Marlins' Victor Victor Mesa: Quiet start to pro career

Mesa is slashing .225/.250/.238 through 19 games with High-A Jupiter with four RBI and five stolen bases. The Marlins gave the 22-year-old Cuban a fairly challenging assignment to begin his pro career in North America, and while Mesa isn't yet hitting the ball with any authority -- only one of his 18 hits, a double, has gone for extra bases -- he hasn't appeared completely overmatched, posting a reasonable 3:10 BB:K. He missed most of camp in March with a hamstring injury, so consider this first month his spring training. He remains Miami's top fantasy prospect and should heat up over the summer.

  • Marlins' Victor Victor Mesa: Opening at High-A

Mesa is opening the year at High-A Jupiter, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports. He dealt with a minor hamstring strain in camp, but is expected to be ready for the start of the season. The expectation was that Mesa would be assigned to either High-A or Double-A, and the Marlins will elect to give him a more conservative assignment, albeit to the pitcher-friendly Florida State League.

  • Marlins' Victor Victor Mesa: Progressing well in recovery

Mesa (hamstring) might be ready for the start of the minor-league season, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports. Mesa is progressing well in his recovery from a Grade 1 right hamstring strain, and it sounds like he could be ready for game action when High-A Jupiter starts up play April 4. If Mesa isn't ready to join the Hammerheads at the start of the season, the 22-year-old will stay back at extended spring training to get up to speed.

  • Marlins' Victor Victor Mesa: Hamstring strain considered minor

Mesa was diagnosed Tuesday with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain after undergoing an MRI, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports. It's good news for Mesa, as Grade 1 strains are the least severe and typically carry recovery timetables of around 1-to-2 weeks. Mesa had been a member of the Marlins' big-league camp, but he'll be assigned to the minor-league ranks to complete his rehab. The 22-year-old isn't a serious candidate to crack the Opening Day roster, so the Marlins may just elect to keep him at minor-league camp rather than using him in Grapefruit League games once he's shaken off the hamstring issue.

  • Marlins' Victor Victor Mesa: Suffers hamstring strain

Mesa strained his right hamstring in Sunday's spring training game against the Pirates, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports. The strain appears to be a relatively minor one, as he's considered day-to-day. He'll be examined by team doctors Monday, at which point a clearer picture of his recovery timeline should emerge.
