Red Sox's Hudson Potts: Managing oblique strain
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts has yet to play in a spring training game due to an oblique strain, Chris Hatfield of reports.

The 22-year-old has been held out for the first week of spring games due to the injury in his first camp with the Red Sox. Potts was acquired from the Padres at last year's trade deadline in the Mitch Moreland trade. He figures to open 2021 at Double-A or Triple-A once healthy.

Red Sox's Hudson Potts: Added to 40-man roster
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts' contract was purchased by the Red Sox on Friday.

The headliner in the trade that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego, Potts could have really used a traditional minor-league season to work on his approach against upper-level pitchers after struggling at Double-A in 2019 (93 wRC+, 28.6 percent strikeout rate). Even so, he just turned 22, so he wouldn't even be old for the level if he were sent back to Double-A at the start of the 2021 season. He still possesses plus right-handed pop and has a chance to handle third base.

Red Sox's Hudson Potts: Traded for Moreland
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts and Jeisson Rosario were traded from the Padres to the Red Sox on Sunday in exchange for Mitch Moreland, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Potts was included in the Padres' 60-player pool, allowing him to be traded ahead of Monday's deadline. The 21-year-old was one of San Diego's top prospects and spent most of 2019 at the Double-A level, posting a .227/.290/.406 slash line, 16 homers and 128 strikeouts in 409 at-bats.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Reassigned to minor-league camp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts (hamstring) was moved to minor-league camp Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Potts got off to a good start this spring, going 3-for-9 with a pair of RBI through five Cactus League games. However, he has been hobbled by a tight hamstring since late February. Potts hit .227 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI with Double-A Amarillo last season.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Dealing with hamstring injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts is dealing with hamstring tightness and will likely be limited for several days, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

It's unclear exactly when or how Potts sustained the injury, but he could be shut down for several days as he recovers. The 21-year-old likely isn't in consideration for an Opening Day roster spot, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him back in action after several days as he prepares for the start of the minor-league season.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Plates run in Arizona Fall League
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Peoria of the Arizona Fall League on Saturday.

Potts has showed well thus far in his first AFL stint, picking up a hit in each of his three games. He continues to struggle making contact, however, striking out four times in 11 at-bats after whiffing 128 times in 107 games with Double-A Amarillo this season.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Headed to Arizona Fall League
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts has been selected to play for Peoria in the Arizona Fall League, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Potts, the Padres' first-round draft pick in 2016, has struggled to the tune of a .224 average and 123 strikeouts in 388 at-bats with Double-A Amarillo this season. He has flashed good power, however, hitting 14 homers and 23 doubles while collecting 56 RBI. His time in the AFL will allow Potts to work on his skills among many of the top prospects in baseball.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Returns from IL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts (undisclosed) went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his first game back with Double-A Amarillo on Monday.

Potts didn't need much time to convince the Padres' brass that he was ready to return to Amarillo, going 8-for-12 during his brief rehab assignment in the AZL. He has mostly struggled against Double-A arms again this season, slashing .206/.282/.342 after limping to a .154/.258/.231 line last year in his first exposure to the level (22 games). The lack of production over the past calendar year has hurt his stock, but Potts is still only 20 years old and still has appeal in deep dynasty leagues given his power.

Padres' Hudson Potts: On minor-league IL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts is on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Amarillo with an undisclosed injury.

He was placed on the injured list June 2 and has not played since May 31. The injury isn't ideal, but Potts' performance this year is the more concerning issue. He was hitting .209/.286/.347 with five home runs and a 33.2 percent strikeout rate in 50 games prior to the injury. Potts now has 105 strikeouts, 28 walks and seven home runs in 72 career games at the Double-A level. On the bright side, he is the youngest qualified hitter in the Texas League (20 years old), so he could repeat the level next year and still be quite young for the league.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Working at keystone
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts is starting at second base Wednesday against the Reds.

This is noteworthy because Manny Machado is clearly the Padres' third baseman of the future, so Potts will need to find somewhere else to play. He has also seen time at first base. There is no position where the Padres have a perceived long-term opening, so Potts' best avenue to everyday at-bats is a trade, but it's nice to see that second base could become an option for him.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Earns promotion to Double-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts was promoted to Double-A San Antonio on Thursday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Potts will take the place of Ty France, who was promoted to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding roster move. The 19-year-old Potts has impressed as one of the youngest hitters in the California League, hitting .281/.350/.498 with 17 homers and 58 RBI through 106 games with High-A Lake Elsinore before being promoted. He'll likely spend the rest of the season with the Missions.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Takes advantage of Lancaster
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts went 9-for-16 with three home runs, five runs, eight RBI, three walks and two strikeouts across four games in Lancaster over the weekend.

Lancaster is perhaps the most hitter-friendly park in the minors, but this still qualifies as a monster series for the 19-year-old third baseman. He upped his season average from .262 to .276 in those four games alone and is tied for second in the California League with 16 home runs. Potts is also the second-youngest qualified hitter in the league. He profiles nicely as a power-hitting third baseman who could hit fifth or sixth in a good big-league lineup someday.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Solid start to High-A season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts is hitting .296 with two home runs and an .833 OPS in his first 14 games for High-A Lake Elsinore.

Potts held his own with 20 home runs and a .731 OPS last year for Low-A Fort Wayne as the fifth youngest hitter in the Midwest League. It's only a few weeks into the season, but the move to High-A hasn't slowed his momentum.

Padres' Hudson Potts: Holding his own in Midwest League
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Potts is slashing .244/.271/.370 with two homers and 14 RBI across 133 plate appearances with Low-A Fort Wayne.

The 18-year-old Potts is one of the younger players in the Midwest League, but he hasn't looked out of place in his first exposure to full-season ball. Though Potts' season batting line isn't impressive at first glance, things seem to be clicking for him lately. He's gone 7-for-10 with a homer and five RBI over his last two contests.
