If you're a fan of the Eagles' old-school color scheme -- those kelly green numbers which were replaced by the midnight green versions in the mid '90s -- there could be some good news on the way.
Team president Don Smolenski says there have been discussions with the league about a change.
“We have talked about it and there are some rules with the NFL that provides some restrictions that we’re trying to work through, but that’s going to take some time,” Smolenski told the 94WIP Morning Show Wednesday. “It’s there, and it’s something that we do talk about, but until some things change at the NFL level it’s going to provide restrictions for us. It is being talked about it, yes.”
But the Philadelphia Daily News' Les Bowen explains that such a change could come with some complications.
"Turns out, the Eagles might like for us to see it, but the league has put in a rule that says you have to wear the same helmet, regardless of what you do with the rest of the uniform," Bowen writes. "So right now, if the Eagles dressed in kelly green, they'd have to do so with midnight green helmets, which would look silly.
"The rule has to do with concussion protection, making sure the fit is right and helmets are thoroughly vetted in practice and so on before they're worn in games. Of course, it would be possible to do this with any color helmet, but right now, that's the rule. So it would have to be changed for kelly green to happen, Eagles sources say."
No idea how the league explains the throwback-uniform phenomenon, which usually includes players wearing different helmets. Either way, according to Bowen, kelly green jerseys are a distinct possibility, but only if you're comfortable with midnight green helmets. For the time being, anyway.
