Here's a bold suggestion for the next Patriots quarterback: Peyton Manning
Boomer Esiason threw out the Sheriff as a possibility
Tests are still being done on Garoppolo's shoulder, but he could miss up to six weeks with the injury (alternately, it's been reported he could be back by Week 4). Jacoby Brissett is talented, but he's also a rookie.
So who should New England bring in? Speaking on the NFL on CBS halftime show, Boomer Esiason, while looking at a long list of free-agent quarterbacks, suggested they make a shocker of a call to Peyton Manning.
"I got a name for you -- the guy's not even on the list," Esiason said. "He's busy doing a lot of commercials. His name is Peyton Manning. Why not?"
Boomer's suggestion was met with plenty of uproar -- guys on the set pointed out he's retired. But compare Manning to the rest of the names on the list: Johnny Manziel, Tavaris Jackson, Jimmy Clausen, Josh Freeman, Matt Flynn, Ryan Lindley, Charlie Whitehurst, Matt Hasselbeck, Michael Vick and Tim Tebow.
Those guys aren't going to step onto the Pats roster and make a difference out of the gate. Because, as Bill Cowher pointed out, there needs to be some familiarity when it comes to whoever New England might theoretically add.
"Look for a guy that's got some connection with Josh McDaniels," Cowher said. "Because he's going to have to learn this system in a very short time."
Tebow is the only one on that list who really fits the bill, having been drafted by McDaniels while with Denver and later spending some time on the Pats roster. But he's busy playing baseball.
The most likely solution? The Pats hope Garoppolo will be able to come back by Week 4 and roll with Jacoby Brissett during Week 3, seeing what the rookie's got and hoping he can bridge the gap until Tom Brady returns.
As for Manning, he might be interested in the idea of playing for a potential Super Bowl winner, but he's been retired all offseason, so he's exactly in playing shape. And the last time he played, it was the Broncos defense that carried him to a title, not the other way around.
