Jonathan Martin: Playing in the NFL led me to 'multiple' suicide attempts
Former NFL offensive lineman Jonathan Martin wrote a lengthy note reflecting on his time spent in the NFL and the hardships he encountered.

In the very early hours of Wednesday morning, at roughly two hours past midnight, former NFL offensive lineman Jonathan Martin posted a lengthy note on his Twitter account. The note, which was accompanied by the caption "If you don't know... Now you know," detailed the personal struggles and anguishes that Martin dealt with, both before his time in the NFL and during his NFL career.
In the note, Martin opens up about race, the hardships of the NFL, family, and multiple suicide attempts. You can read what Martin wrote below.
But be warned: Martin uses explicit language throughout his writing.

A former second-round pick of the Dolphins, Martin was involved in the well-documented 2013 bullying scandal. After allegations emerged that Dolphins teammate Richie Incognito bullied Martin, Incognito was suspended from the team during the season and Martin was eventually traded to the 49ers in the offseason. Incognito is currently a member of the Bills.
In Ted Wells' report on the subject, which was released in 2014, Wells concluded that Martin endured "a pattern of harassment" from three teammates. Incognito's lawyer called the report "replete with errors" and denied that Martin was ever bullied by his teammates.
In the aftermath of the report, offensive line coach Jim Turner was fired. In May of last year, Turner angrily spoke about his dismissal with SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio. In that interview, Turner refuted the idea of Wells being an independent investigator, saying that Wells "targeted" him during the investigation.
Turner went on to say that Martin had told him about multiple suicide attempts, claiming that Martin told him about two separate instances that he had contemplated suicide. Turner said that he informed Wells of what Martin had told him.
"They left that out of the report," Turner said at the time, saying that he thinks Wells wanted to "protect" Martin.
Incognito also claimed that Martin told him in May of 2013 that he was thinking about taking his own life.
Up until Wednesday, Martin had never spoken about any suicide attempts. But in his note, Martin mentioned suicide, writing that "your job leads you to attempt to kill yourself on multiple occasions."
Martin retired from the NFL this summer due to a back injury.
