Gachkar (thumb) returned to practice Sunday, David Helman of DallasCowboys.com reports.
His hand is still in a cast to protect the healing digit, but Gachkar will at least have a couple of weeks to get his game legs under him. The thumb injury likely cost him any chance of winning the starting middle linebacker spot that opened up due to Rolando McClain's latest suspension, but Gachkar could still be ready for Week 1 and see significant snaps during the season.

The 27-year-old linebacker had surgery on his thumb last Friday and is currently without a timetable for return. Head coach Jason Garrett indicated he will be out "a little while." He is currently doing conditioning work with the team.

According to head coach Jason Garrett, there is no timetable for Gachkar's return but it is expected he should only be sidelined for a few weeks. Last season, the 27-year-old registered 14 tackles through 16 games in a reserved role.

Cowboys' Andrew Gachkar: Will compete for starting middle linebacker spot
Gachkar is in the mix to start at middle linebacker while Rolando McClain serves his 10-game suspension, Dallas Morning News reports.
Anthony Hitchens, who started nine games last season, is the favorite to win the job and ultra-athletic second-year LB Mark Nzeocha could also factor in with a big camp, but Gachkar received most of the first-team reps at middle linebacker in OTAs and minicamp. The veteran was primarily used on special teams last year, but at the very least should see an increase in defensive snaps in 2016.
