Chris Butler: Announces retirement
Butler will hang up his skates and end his professional career, the team announced Wednesday.
Butler was limited to a mere 13 NHL games last season, instead spending the bulk of the year in the minors with AHL San Antonio. Over the course of his 11-year career, the 32-year-old notched 14 goals, 72 assists and 187 PIM in 407 contests. Selected by the Sabres in the fourth round of the 2005 NHL Draft, the blueliner would go on to play for Buffalo, Calgary and St. Louis.

Butler was reassigned to AHL San Antonio on Monday, Lou Korac of NHL.com reports.
Butler was a healthy scratch in nine of 10 games since being called up, so his services clearly weren't essential at the top level. The veteran blueliner needed to be sent down at some point Monday in order to be eligible for AHL playoffs, and he'll likely stick there for a while since the Blues acquired defenseman Michael Del Zotto from the Ducks.

Well, that's not the way to ring in the New Year, but the reality is that Butler has made a minimal impact with the Blues since he joined the club in 2014-15. The defenseman has supplied four goals and seven helpers for the Notes over a five-year span, and it's entirely possible that he'll pass through waivers unclaimed and sync up with AHL San Antonio, the minor-league affiliate for the Blues.

He's the type that seems to be too good for the AHL -- fashioning five goals and 20 assists with the Wolves this season -- but rarely counted on for a substantial role at hockey's highest level.
