The Panthers traded Weegar, Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt and a first-round pick to the Flames on Friday in exchange for Matthew Tkachuk and a fourth-round pick Friday. There had been rumors this offseason regarding a potential trade for Weegar despite other reports stating that he and the Panthers were working on an extension. Those rumors culminated in him being involved with the biggest blockbuster of the offseason. Weegar averaged 23:22 of ice time with eight goals and 44 points through 80 games last season. On top of that, he also blocked 156 shots, laid out 179 hits and put 203 shots on net. The 28-year-old blueliner will immediately slot into Calgary's top four and could see an increase in power-play time as well. Weegar has one year left on his $3.25 million AAV deal.... See More ... Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Nabs helper Friday
Weegar recorded an assist, five shots on goal and three hits in Friday's 4-3 overtime win over the Capitals in Game 6. Weegar picked up his first point of the playoffs with the secondary helper on an Aleksander Barkov tally. The 28-year-old Weegar has been solid defensively even as he has struggled to replicate his 44-point effort from 80 regular-season contests. The Ontario native has added 27 hits, 16 shots on net, six blocked shots and a plus-4 rating through six postseason games.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: On the ice Monday
Weegar (rest) was paired up with Aaron Ekblad (lower body) at Monday's practice, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports. After taking the last two games off, Weegar was back in his customary role at practice. The blueliner was a crucial piece of the Panthers' leading the league in goals per game this year (4.11), as he set new career bests in goals (eight), assists (36) and shots (203). Still, looking ahead to the playoffs, Weegar's productivity could drop a little if Ekblad is cleared to return as Weegar would then have to play in a slightly more defensive posture.... See More ... Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Sitting out Thursday
Weegar (rest) will not play Thursday in Ottawa. With the playoffs starting next week, Weegar and four other Panthers will rest for Thursday's game. It's unclear how many of the players sitting out Thursday will suit up for Friday's regular-season finale in Montreal, though.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Supplies assist in win
Weegar notched an assist, four shots on goal and three blocked shots in Friday's 6-1 win over the Jets. Weegar set up a Maxim Mamin goal in the third period. With a goal and six assists in his last seven games, Weegar's offense is back on track after a quiet March. The 28-year-old blueliner has posted career highs across the board with 42 points, 189 shots on net, 167 hits, 148 blocked shots, 67 PIM and a plus-39 rating in 74 contests.... See More ... Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Two-point night in high-scoring win
Weegar had two assists -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's 7-6 overtime win over the Maple Leafs. Weegar assisted on Sam Reinhart's second-period power-play goal, which cut Florida's deficit to 5-2 and started a streak of five unanswered Panthers goals. His second helper came on Jonathan Huberdeau's overtime winner. Remarkably, Radko Gudas' shorthanded goal was the only other point by a Panthers defenseman in this offensive extravaganza. The blueliner has three points over his last two outings following a slump of 11 straight without a point.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Supplies assist in win
Weegar recorded an assist and went plus-4 in Friday's 6-2 win over the Wild. Weegar set up Carter Verhaeghe's empty-netter at 13:18 of the third period. In his last five games, Weegar has a goal and three assists, though he had been limited to one four-point effort in his previous nine outings. The defenseman has 29 points, a plus-28 rating, 117 shots on net, 120 hits and 99 blocked shots through 49 contests. He's sturdy defensively and no slouch on offense either -- Weegar should continue to provide well-rounded production in fantasy.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Chips in bonus
Weegar provided a goal in an 8-4 win over the Blue Jackets on Monday. Weegar has points in back-to-back games now after having been quiet in the points column in the previous six contests. The blueliner is at 27 points in 46 games this season.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Snaps cold spell
Weegar generated an assist in Saturday's 5-4 overtime win over the Sharks. Weegar snapped a six-game point drought with a clutch secondary assist that helped force overtime. While he's struggled of late, the Panthers likely have no complaints about Weegar since he's demonstrated remarkable year-over-year improvement on both ends of the ice. This season, the top-pairing blueliner is up to three goals, 23 assists, 94 blocked shots and 117 hits; he'll sail to career highs if he can sustain that lofty production.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Four-point explosion in win
Weegar had a goal and three assists in Saturday's 9-2 victory over Columbus. What a game. His goal was a shorty and it stood as the winner. Weegar continues to show how valuable he is to the Florida offense and fantasy rosters in all formats. His 25 points in 38 games put him on track for a remarkable 50-plus point season -- he's done almost all of it without power-play exposure. Weegar has just one power-play point this season.... Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Exits COVID protocols
Weegar (COVID-19 protocols) returned to practice Tuesday after clearing the league's protocols, Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site reports. Weegar appears to have benefited from the league's extended Christmas break, as he appears set to return to action against the Rangers on Wednesday without missing any games. The Ottawa native has yet to find the back of the net this season but has generated 15 helpers in 29 appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Enters virus protocols
Weegar entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols Sunday. Weegar is one of four Florida players that landed on the COVID-19 list Sunday, with the others being Eetu Luostarinen, Owen Tippett and Jonathan Huberdeau. Weegar has yet to score a goal this season but has been productive nonetheless, racking up 15 assists across 29 games.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Does everything but find twine
Weegar dished out a pair of helpers -- one on the power play -- to go with six shots, four blocked shots and three hits in Thursday's 7-4 win over Buffalo. Weegar's stat-stuffing performance was overshadowed by the likes of Jonathan Huberdeau (one goal, four assists) and Aaron Ekblad (two goals, one assist), but fantasy managers continue to benefit from Weegar's well-rounded game in the vast majority of formats. The 27-year-old blueliner is still in search of his first goal this season, but Weegar's up to 14 assists through 23 games, including five during his current four-game point streak.... See More ... Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Secures 10th assist
Weegar produced an assist in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Capitals. Weegar has been fantastic based on four assists and a plus-5 rating over the last five games. Florida's seventh-round pick from 2013 isn't afraid to do the dirty work, either, as Weegar has committed to 55 hits and 43 blocked shots on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Gathers helper
Weegar produced an assist, five hits and a plus-2 rating in Friday's 3-2 overtime win over the Red Wings. Weegar earned the secondary helper on Aleksander Barkov's game-winning goal in overtime. The 27-year-old Weegar is already up to five assists through eight contests, proving last year's 36-point effort from 54 games was not a fluke. The Ontario native has added 14 shots on net, 23 hits, 14 blocked shots and a plus-9 rating in 2021-22 while logging top-pairing minutes.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Goal and assist in win
Weegar scored a goal, dished an assist and went plus-3 in Monday's 4-1 win over the Lightning in Game 5. Weegar scored the game-tying goal at 6:19 of the second period. He also added a helper on Mason Marchment's go-ahead goal 10 minutes later. The 27-year-old Weegar added four hits and three blocked shots in Monday's contest. The blueliner has three points, nine shots on goal, 18 hits, nine blocked shots and a plus-2 rating through five postseason contests. He racked up 36 points, 118 hits and 83 blocks in 54 regular-season outings in a breakout season.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Collects pair of assists
Weegar provided two assists and two shots on goal in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win over the Blackhawks. Weegar had a shot attempt tipped in by Alexander Wennberg on the power play in the second period. In overtime, Weegar set up Sam Bennett's game-winning goal. Through 50 outings, Weegar has 32 points, 91 shots, 110 hits, 73 blocked shots and a plus-23 rating. If he sticks on the power play, he could be a true all-around force in fantasy.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Reaches 30-point mark
Weegar registered an assist, two shots on net, two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Predators. Weegar had the secondary helper on Aleksander Barkov's second-period tally. The 27-year-old Weegar reached the 30-point mark for the first time in his career, and he needed only 49 games to do it. The Ontario native has added 89 shots, 110 hits, 72 blocks, 43 PIM and a plus-22 rating in a breakout season.... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Ties team record for blueliner
Weegar scored a career-high four points (one goal, three assists) in a 4-3 overtime victory over Carolina on Saturday. Weegar tied a team record for most points in a game by a defenseman. He has 29 points, including four goals, in 47 games, but had just one assist in the six games prior to this outburst. That means that many fantasy managers likely chose someone else to activate Saturday. Weegar gets next to no power-play opportunities, so his 29 points are hard-fought. Not bad for a seventh-round pick (2013).... See More ... See Less -
Panthers' MacKenzie Weegar: Suiting up Thursday
Weegar (upper body) will be in the lineup for Thursday's game against Carolina, George Richards of Florida Hockey Now reports. Weegar missed the past two games with the upper-body issue, but he'll make his return to the lineup. The 27-year-old will handle a top-pairing role for Thursday's game, as he's racked up 25 points and a plus-17 rating across 45 games this campaign.... See More ... See Less
