Aube-Kubel gave Washington a 2-1 lead in the second period, jumping on a neutral-zone turnover before working around the Columbus defense and firing a shot under the pad of Elvis Merzlikins. It's the first goal of the season for Aube-Kubel, who'd been a healthy scratch in the Capitals' previous two contests. The 26-year-old forward has a goal and four assists through 12 games this season.

Aube-Kubel was initially projected to be a healthy scratch for the 11th game in a row, but he got the assignment over Joe Snively with Lars Eller (upper body) out. It worked out, as Aube-Kubel earned his first two points of the season with assists on goals by Nic Dowd and Dmitry Orlov. Aube-Kubel has added eight shots on net, 11 PIM, 29 hits and a plus-1 rating in 11 contests between the Capitals and the Maple Leafs. When he plays, he's often limited to a fourth-line role.

Capitals' Nicolas Aube-Kubel: Receives three-game suspension
Aube-Kubel was suspended for three games Saturday for his check to the head of Tampa Bay's Cal Foote on Friday.
Aube-Kubel also received a match penalty Friday because of the incident. Foote was injured on the play and didn't return to Friday's contest. The NHL Department of Player Safety argued that Aube-Kubel made the head the main point of contact and that the head contact was avoidable. Aube-Kubel is eligible to return Nov. 19 versus Colorado. If Washington inserts him into the lineup after he serves his suspension, it will likely be as a fourth liner.

Aube-Kubel has no points, four PIM and 21 hits in six games while averaging 9:05 of ice time with the Maple Leafs this season. Even if he clears and gets sent to the minors, there's a fair chance Toronto will summon him later in the season. Any time he's in the NHL, though, it likely won't be for anything more than a fourth-line role.

Aube-Kubel spent most of the 2021-22 campaign with the Avalanche, picking up a respectable 11 goals, 11 assists and 123 hits while averaging 9:49 of ice time through 67 contests. As long as Aube-Kubel is able to maintain a regular spot in Toronto's bottom six in 2022-23, he'll probably once again hover around the 25-point mark if he's able to stay healthy.

Aube-Kubel will not be receiving a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent Wednesday, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports.
Aube-Kubel failed to register a single point in 14 postseason contests and was a healthy scratch for the Avs' final three games of the Stanley Cup Finals. During the regular season, the 26-year-old center was slightly more productive with 11 goals and 11 assists in 67 games, all career bests, but considering the big deal the team just handed Valeri Nichushkin (eight years and $49 million), something had to give for Colorado, and Aube-Kubel finds himself the odd man out.

Aube-Kubel scored a goal on two shots in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Penguins.
Aube-Kubel stepped into a drop pass from Alex Newhook and whistled a slapshot past Tristan Jarry. The forward was a healthy scratch in Colorado's previous game, but Nazem Kadri's upper-body injury opened a spot on the active roster. The tally was Aube-Kubel's first since Feb. 13, a 20-game stretch during which he was inactive twice. Head coach Jared Bednar said Kadri "is going to miss some time," according to Kelsey Hammond of Colorado Hockey Now, so Aube-Kubel could remain in the lineup for the immediate future.

This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Colorado's lineup featured both trade-deadline acquisitions -- Andrew Cogliano and Artturi Lehkonen -- plus they had Nathan MacKinnon back in the fold. It's uncertain if Aube-Kubel will become the permanent 13th forward or if there will be a rotation of healthy players scratched.
