Kossila didn't get into any NHL games this season, but he was highly productive in the minors, racking up seven goals and 29 points through 28 appearances with AHL Toronto. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 28-year-old forward spend the rest of his playing days overseas.

Kossila has been recovering from an undisclosed injury he sustained during the Maple Leafs' second preseason contest, which is the only reason he's remained on the big club's roster this long. As long as he goes unclaimed, the 26-year-old will be assigned to AHL Toronto.

The Maple Leafs placed Kossila (undisclosed) on non-roster injured reserve Monday.
Kossila left a preseason game Sept. 18 as a precautionary measure, and it appears that mystery injury has developed into a real issue. The 26-year-old won't count on the team's 23-man roster, and he'll be eligible to return Oct. 7 for a matchup against the Blues. Once he's healthy, however, Kossila will likely head to AHL Toronto.

Considering how banged up the Ducks are right now, it's a little surprising to see them immediately send Kossila down to the minors. It's possible the club wants to give him some game action before tossing him into an NHL contest. Even with all the injuries for the club, the center figures to see more action with the Gulls than with the Ducks.

Kossila has undergone hip surgery and will be out until Thanksgiving at the earliest, Elliott Teaford of The Orange County Register reports.
Players have reported for training camp, going through routine physicals to determine their physical readiness for the upcoming season. There had been no word of a hip injury for Kossila until this point, so the latest tests must have brought the center's issue to light. Kossila signed a one-year contract extension in mid-July, but now he'll presumably sync up with AHL San Diego upon his eventual return.

Kossila's recall comes on the heels of the team's announcement that John Gibson was placed on injured reserve. It's unlikely the 24-year-old will play a major role for the Ducks, but he's posted an impressive campaign in the NHL this season -- totaling 38 points in 35 games. He should provide some depth up front and could be a candidate to stick around with the trade deadline and roster expansion looming.

Kossila returns to the minors where he has notched seven points in just eight contests this season. A standout at St. Cloud State University, the winger has translated his game well to the professional level and probably won't have to wait too much longer to make the NHL full time.
