  • Devils' Dawson Mercer: Durable rookie season

Mercer dressed in all 82 games as a rookie in 2021-22, totaling 17 goals and 25 assists. Mercer showed plenty of promising traits in his first NHL season. He displayed both durability and versatility, as he was the only player to play in every game for the Devils while shifting between center and wing depending on who was available around him at the time. Mercer was also one of only six New Jersey skaters to top the 40-point mark, so he was productive as a rookie and has a bright future ahead of him as a likely middle-six staple for years to come.

  • Devils' Dawson Mercer: Three-point outing not enough

Mercer scored a goal and added two assists -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Lightning. Mercer opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the season, then assisted on goals by Yegor Sharangovich and Jack Hughes. The former came on the power play late in the first while the latter gave New Jersey a 3-1 lead early in the second, but it was all Tampa Bay after Hughes' goal. While this one didn't go the Devils' way, they have reason to be optimistic over the play of their first-round selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, as Mercer has compiled 28 points over his first 50 games in the NHL.

The 20-year-old Mercer has made an impact from a middle-six role this season, as he's up to 23 points and 78 shots on net in 44 contests. While he's picked up just two power-play points, a little more overall consistency could make him a solid depth option in fantasy.

  • Devils' Dawson Mercer: Produces helper in win

Mercer notched an assist, two shots on goal and a plus-3 rating in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Flyers. Mercer didn't have as much fun as linemates Andreas Johnsson (two goals, two assists) and Jesper Bratt (goal, two assists), but he was still on the ice for the Devils' best moments Sunday. The 20-year-old Mercer has performed admirably as a rookie with six tallies, eight helpers, 44 shots, a plus-12 rating and 10 PIM in 19 contests. Jack Hughes (shoulder) is nearing a return after participating fully in practice Saturday, but Mercer should still play a prominent role in the Devils' offense even if his ice time takes a slight dip.

Playing in just his fifth NHL game, the 2020 first-round pick put together his first multi-point performance and recorded his first point with the man advantage. The 20-year-old is getting a big opportunity while Jack Hughes (shoulder) is on the shelf, but Mercer is playing well enough to potentially keep a top-six assignment even after Hughes is back in the lineup.
