  • Avalanche's Mikhail Maltsev: Sent down

Maltsev was assigned to AHL Colorado on Sunday. Maltsev's loan to the minors could be for cap-related reasons. If that's the case, he could be back with the Avalanche prior to the team's tilt with Nashville on Thursday. He skated on the fourth line, a unit that's not yet established, as head coach Jared Bednar tried multiple combinations, and been given little TOI early in the season. Tuesday's on-ice usage did not deviate from the pattern. Maltsev and his mates had just two third-period shifts.

  • Avalanche's Mikhail Maltsev: Secures one-year deal

Maltsev penned a one-year contract with Colorado on Wednesday. Maltsev played in 18 games for the Avs this past season in which he failed to register a single point. Maltsev had two shots on goal and five hits in Thursday's 4-1 win over Los Angeles. Maltsev has been much more aggressive since rejoining the NHL roster Jan. 11. In the six games played since his promotion, Maltsev has delivered 19 hits. That's compared to the three checks thrown in six games over two stints earlier in the season. Clearly, the fourth-line forward received the message that he needs to be more feisty.

With the Avs traveling to Chicago for Tuesday's clash with the Blackhawks, Maltsev figures to serve as an emergency option in the event of an injury or positive COVID-19 test among the forward group. As such, the 23-year-old Matsev shouldn't be expected to get onto the ice with Colorado and will likely head back to the minors sooner rather than later.
