  • Jets' Saku Maenalanen: Scores two goals Sunday

Maenalanen scored two goals in Sunday's 7-2 win over Chicago. Maenalanen has three goals and four points in 20 games this season. He entered Sunday's contest with an average of 11:07 of ice time this season. Although he exceeded that average Sunday by logging 14:56, he wasn't used on the power play and is still serving primarily as a bottom-six forward. As things stand, Maenalanen isn't expected to make regular offensive contributions.

  • Jets' Saku Maenalanen: Nets first goal of season

Maenalanen scored a goal on two shots and added two hits in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Stars. Maenalanen hadn't gotten on the scoresheet since he recorded an assist on Opening Night. He changed that with an insurance marker late in the second period of Tuesday's win. The 28-year-old hasn't done much in his return to the NHL after three full years overseas. He has two points, 13 shots on net, 36 hits and a plus-1 rating in 12 contests while logging bottom-six minutes.

  • Jets' Saku Maenalanen: Offers assist

Maenalanen recorded an assist in Friday's 4-1 win over the Rangers. After three seasons in Europe, Maenalanen returned to the NHL and made the Jets' Opening Night roster. The 28-year-old forward picked up eight points in 34 games as a Hurricane in 2018-19, so there's not a lot of offensive upside here even if he can maintain a fourth-line job. The Finn will likely face competition from Axel Jonsson-Fjallby for playing time.

  • Jets' Saku Maenalanen: Returning to North America

Maenalanen signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Jets on Tuesday, per CapFriendly. Maenalanen spent the last three years in Finland. He played in 47 games with Karpat last season, racking up 13 goals and 28 assists, and he spent the two previous years with Jokerit in the KHL. He drew into 38 games with the Hurricanes in 2018-19, but it's unclear if he'll begin 2022-23 with the Jets or AHL Manitoba.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Headed for KHL

Maenalanen signed a one-year contract with the Helsinki Jokerit (KHL) on Wednesday. Maenalanen was at a contract impasse with the Hurricanes, who issued the winger a qualifying offer which he has yet to sign. With no movement on a new deal in sight, it appears the Finn will return to his homeland and play in the KHL instead. Carolina will retain his rights should he ever decide to return to North America.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Qualified by Carolina

Maenalanen received a qualifying offer from the Hurricanes on Tuesday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports. No surprise here, as the Hurricanes are flush with cap space and opted to qualify all of their RFAs. Maenalanen should return to a bottom-six role, similar to the one in which he totaled eight points over 34 appearances as a rookie last season.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Ready to rock

Maenalanen (upper body) has been cleared to rejoin the lineup ahead of Tuesday's Game 3 against the Bruins, Luke DeCock of The News & Observer reports. Maenalanen has been sidelined for over two weeks due to an upper-body injury, but he's finally put that issue behind him, and is expected to return to a bottom-six role for Game 3. The 24-year-old rookie has picked up one assist in seven appearances this postseason.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Hasn't been cleared for contact

Maenalanen (upper body) remained in a non-contact jersey for Saturday's practice, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports. Maenalanen has been skating with the team since Tuesday, but he won't be a candidate to return to the lineup until he's able to start taking contact in practice. Another update on the 24-year-old rookie's status should surface once that occurs.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Skates in non-contact jersey

Maenalanen (upper body) was on the ice Tuesday sporting a non-contact sweater, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Considering Maenalanen hasn't been cleared for contact, he is unlikely to play in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, but coach Rod Brind'Amour hasn't provided a specific timeline for the winger's recovery. Once given the green light, the youngster will likely force Patrick Brown back up to the press box.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Done for Round 2

Head coach Rod Brind'Amour said Monday that Maenalanen (upper body) won't be available for the remainder of the series against the Islanders, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Maenalanen saw 9:35 of ice time and recorded his first point of the playoffs before he was forced to leave Sunday's Game 2. This news certainly doesn't bode well for the team, which has a laundry list of injuries to its forward group at the moment.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Won't return Sunday

Maenalanen (upper body) will not return to Sunday's contest against the Islanders. The 24-year-old rookie recorded his first postseason point before leaving Sunday's game, assisting Warren Foegele's goal just 17 seconds into the third period. Maenalanen is averaging roughly 10 minutes of ice time per game this postseason but he now joins Carolina's long list of injured forwards.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Comes off bench for Game 2

Maenalanen skated just 4:16 in Saturday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Capitals in Game 2 after sitting out Thursday's series opener. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old Finn had just eight points in 34 regular-season games this season, and hasn't registered a point since Feb. 26. With 83 points over three seasons in the Finnish Elite League, Maenalanen will offer decent fantasy upside someday, but only once he's secured a regular spot in the lineup. After skating in 23 straight games in January and February, he's been serving mostly as a healthy scratch since then.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Riding pine

Maenalanen was a healthy scratch for the third time in the past nine games Friday against the Blue Jackets. The 24-year-old Finn is really nothing more than a depth forward for the Canes at this point in the season, and will likely continue to see limited game action as long as the team has a healthy contingent of forwards. Maenalanen has just eight points in 30 games this season, giving him negligible fantasy value in just about any format.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Recalled to parent club

Maenalanen is back with the Hurricanes, per the NHL's official media site. The Finn was sent down Monday in a paper move to preserve his eligibility for the AHL playoffs, but is expected to suit up for the parent club in the near future. The 24-year-old has been decent for the Hurricanes this campaign, racking up seven points in 24 games.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Watches from press box

Maenalanen was a healthy scratch for Saturday's 3-0 win over the Stars. This was the first time riding the pine for Maenalanen since being recalled from AHL Charlotte in early January. However, he had only been averaging about eight minutes a game over his previous 10 contests, and had just a single assist over that stretch. Whether he's in the lineup or not, the 24-year-old Finn doesn't possess an abundance of fantasy value right now.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Earns assist

Maenalanen notched a helper versus the Canucks on Wednesday. Since being called up Jan. 1, Maenalanen's tallied six points in 12 contests while logging 10:32 of ice time per game. The Finnish winger has clearly capitalized on opportunities created by injuries to Micheal Ferland (upper body) and Jordan Staal (upper body). Whether the youngster sticks with the Canes once those two players are cleared remains to be seen, but he is at least making a strong case to remain in Carolina.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Two goals in win

Maenalanen lit the lamp twice in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers. Maenalanen was recalled from AHL Charlotte on Jan. 1, and he now has four goals and an assist in his first nine NHL games while averaging just 9:26 TOI. Of course, his 33.3 shooting percentage is bound to slip, but this scoring depth is a nice touch for the Hurricanes.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Recalled from minors

Maenalanen was recalled from AHL Charlotte on Tuesday. Maenalanen trades places on the organizational depth chart with fellow Finn Janne Kuokkanen. The former has a long reach as a 6-foot-4, 207-pound forward and took home a gold medal at the 2014 World Junior Championship, per this latest report. Maenalanen has averaged 0.45 points per game in the AHL, but it's a small sample sized based on 31 games, and it's best to not get too excited about him until we know for certain he'll get the chance to fill in for injured center Jordan Staal -- he's merely day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Shifts to AHL

The Hurricanes reassigned Maenalanen to AHL Charlotte on Saturday, TSN reports. Maenalanen made his NHL debut and recorded two hits during 6:49 of ice time. His return to the minors could be a sign that Jordan Staal (concussion) is nearing a return and could play Tuesday versus the Maple Leafs.

  • Hurricanes' Saku Maenalanen: Gearing up for NHL debut

Maenalanen will make his NHL debut during Friday's game against the Ducks, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports. With Jordan Staal and Micheal Ferland both out with concussions, Maenalanen will sport NHL threads. The 24-year-old has 11 points in 23 games with AHL Charlotte this year and will work on the fourth line.
