Tokyo Olympics 2020: USA women's basketball beats France to stay undefeated; Australia up next in quarterfinal
Team USA has now won 52 straight games at the Olympics

The United States women's basketball team faced another test early on Monday, but they got the job done with a 93-82 win over France. With the win they finished the group stage at the Tokyo Olympics undefeated, secured the top spot in Group B and ran their Olympics winning streak to an incredible 52 games.
France used some hot shooting to take the lead at the end of the first quarter, but once again the Americans didn't let a slow start faze them. They used a big second quarter to regain the lead heading into the halftime break, and after a competitive second half pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure the double-digit victory.
"Here's the thing: We take everybody's best effort," Team USA coach Dawn Staley said. "A marathon isn't won in the first mile, and the first quarter is the first mile to us. We get everybody's best shot; the adrenaline is flowing on both sides. It's hard to create separation.
Reigning WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson continued her strong play in Tokyo by putting up 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead the way. Meanwhile, Breanna Stewart added 17, Tina Charles went for 15 and Brittney Griner chipped in 11 as the trend of interior dominance continued.
Team USA outscored France 46-30 in points in the paint, which was one of the key factors in the win. As we've seen in past Olympics and again here in Tokyo, other countries simply don't have the frontcourt size, skill or depth to deal with Team USA around the basket.
Now, Team USA will head to the quarterfinals, where they'll face Australia. The Opals struggled in the group stage and snuck into the knockout rounds as a third-place finisher, but even without Liz Cambage are still one of the most talented teams in the world. They'll also have plenty of confidence going into this game because of their win over Team USA in a pre-Olympics exhibition game last month.
