An amateur team based out of liquor store scored a stunning goal on an MLS team and gave them a game in the U.S. Open Cup
Christos FC might not have won the match, but it certainly won fans over
Chances are you have no idea who Christos FC is. But it's an amateur adult men's soccer team from Baltimore, Maryland that is based out of a liquor store and appears to have a very passionate fan base.
On Tuesday, the club battled MLS big boys D.C. United in the U.S. Open Cup, looking to continue its Cinderella run which saw the team beat USL club Richmond Kickers and PDL squad Chicago FC United to make it all the way to the fourth round.
And the fans traveled in numbers to the Maryland Soccer Plex for the game, with over 5,000 fans in attendance.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, a big-time soccer fan and supporter of all things Baltimore, was at the match cheering on Christos FC. Check out this fan support:

And would you believe it? Christos FC, made up of a ton of former college players who rarely practice, took the lead through this outstanding, professional quality free kick from Mamadou Kansaye in the first half:

The match was 2-1 late to D.C. before two late goals gave United the 4-1 win. The MLS club may have won, but this amateur team won over plenty of fans for their effort and proved again why the cup is so great. Considering there is no promotion/relegation in U.S. Soccer, this is the only thing we have where the big boys take on the clubs of lower divisions.
This week on Welcome To The Club, we were fortunate enough to be joined by Pete Caringi III, a striker for Christos FC who unfortunately missed out on the match due to injury. He shared what this experience has been like:
We've seen fun runs in the past like the 2012 Michigan Bucks, who beat MLS teams in 2000 and in 2012, and La Maquina FC's 2016 run to the fourth round. Here's another to add to the list.
The U.S. Open Cup, where being amateur means nothing.
