What to Know

The Winthrop Eagles and the Mississippi State Bulldogs will compete for holiday cheer at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday at Mississippi Coliseum. Coming off of a loss in a game they were expected to win, Winthrop now face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.

The Eagles were close but no cigar last Wednesday as they fell 63-61 to the Elon Phoenix. The game was as close as the oddsmakers predicted, but Winthrop had been the slight favorite coming in.

Speaking of close games: the Furman Paladins typically have all the answers at home, but this past Friday MSU proved too difficult a challenge. MSU came out on top in a nail-biter against Furman, sneaking past 69-66. Four players on the Bulldogs scored in the double digits: forward Garrison Brooks (18), guard Iverson Molinar (14), forward D.J. Jeffries (14), and guard Shakeel Moore (12).

Mississippi State's win lifted them to 8-3 while Winthrop's loss dropped them down to 6-5. In Mississippi State's victory, Shakeel Moore had 12 points in addition to six rebounds and Garrison Brooks had 18 points. We'll see if the Eagles have a strategy for dealing with them or if they lead their team to another successful outing.
