A case of mononucleosis might have ended the outstanding high school football career of Shane Morris, according to a report on Mlive.com.

The 6-foot-4, 203-pound senior quarterback from De La Salle Collegiate (Warren, Mich.) is the No. 16-ranked player in the nation and the crown jewel of an outstanding University of Michigan recruiting class.

De La Salle coach Paul Verska told the Detroit Free Press, "He won't play this week. And, really, I'm not counting on him coming back the rest of the year. He had a sore throat and took some medicine and took it easy at practice, but didn't feel any better. Friday morning he had a blood test and found out right before the game he had mono."

Morris did play in the first half of Saturday's 28-0 loss to Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), but was unable to play in the second half. 

Officials believe the illness could explain his lackluster start, which included completing just 40 of 83 passes for 456 yards and three touchdowns in four games.
