South Carolina quarterback Lorenzo Nunez suffered a knee injury in practice Saturday that could force him to miss the rest of spring ball, according to The State and 247Sports.

Nunez reportedly sprained his LCL and hyper-extended his knee during a closed practice and could find himself knocked out of the Gamecocks' quarterback competition. If he has to miss extended time with his injury, he could fall out of the race behind the other four quarterbacks currently getting reps this spring: Perry Orth, Connor Mitch, Michael Scarnecchia and Brandon McIlwain.

New coach Will Muschamp noted last week that he wanted to whittle down the competition to two or three quarterbacks quickly, and this injury could force their hands with removing Nunez from consideration.

Nunez is the most dynamic rushing threat of the five quarterbacks that were vying for the starting job this spring, and Muschamp and new offensive coordinator Kurt Roper were trying to determine if he was a viable option as a passer.

In 2015, he started two games and appeared in eight, completing 61.5 percent of his passes for 376 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while also rushing for 375 yards and 2 touchdowns.
