  • Browns' James Proche: Re-signs with Cleveland

    The Browns have re-signed Proche.

While Proche didn't catch any of his five targets in 10 games with Cleveland during the 2023 regular season, the 2020 sixth-rounder did contribute on special teams by returning 22 punts for 197 yards as well as one kickoff for 19 yards. Now that he's back in the fold, Proche will have a chance to retain his depth WR/special teams role with the Browns in 2024.

  • Browns' James Proche: Returns one punt in loss

Proche returned one punt for two yards in Saturday's 45-14 wild-card playoff loss to Houston.

Proche was a midseason acquisition and took over the punt-return duties after Cleveland traded Donovan Peoples-Jones to the Lions. Proche rarely played on offense outside of a Week 18 meaningless game. His primary body of work over four NFL seasons is that of returner, and he enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

  • Browns' James Proche: Special teams only in loss

Proche returned two punts for 30 yards and did not play on offense in Sunday's 36-19 loss to the Rams in Week 13.

By the end of the game, Proche was sitting fourth on the depth chart, but he never stepped on the field with the offense. Amari Cooper sustained a concussion in the second quarter and left the game, but head coach Kevin Stefanski opted to get by with a trio of Elijah Moore, Cedric Tillman and David Bell. Proche has played a total of nine snaps with the offense and been targeted once through nine games.

  • Browns' James Proche: No run on offense

Proche did not play on offense and had three punt returns for 37 yards in Sunday's 13-10 win over the Steelers.

Proche, who is operating as the No. 5 wideout while Marquise Goodwin (concussion) is unavailable, has taken hold as the primary punt returner. He had a long return of 21 yards that put Cleveland's offense in business on the Pittsburgh side of the field in the third quarter, but an interception ended that threat. In three games on the active roster, Proche has one target and 10 punt returns for 92 yards.

  • Browns' James Proche: One target in win

Proche did not catch his lone target and returned one punt for zero yards in Sunday's 33-31 win over Baltimore.

He was in the lineup for a second straight week as the Browns were without Marquise Goodwin (concussion) and David Bell (knee), but Proche was on the field for just three offensive snaps. Sunday's target was his first of the season.

  • Browns' James Proche: Gets promotion to active roster

Cleveland signed Proche from its practice squad to its active roster Tuesday.

Proche played just six offensive snaps in his 2023 debut Sunday versus Arizona, but the Browns evidently saw enough of him as a punt returner (six returns, 55 yards) to bring him up on a full-time basis ahead of Week 10. In 2022 with Baltimore, Proche turned 17 targets into eight receptions for 62 yards.

  • Browns' James Proche: Handles punt returns

Proche was not targeted and returned six punts for 55 yards in Sunday's 27-0 win over Arizona.

Proche, who was promoted to the active roster after being signed to the practice squad earlier in the week, had six snaps on offense. The Browns earlier in the week traded away their primary punt returner, Donovan Peoples-Jones, which opened up a role for Proche on special teams. However, David Bell (knee) could also compete for the top return job once he's healthy.

  • James Proche: Reverts to practice squad

Proche reverted to the Browns' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.

With David Bell (knee) inactive and Marquise Goodwin (concussion) exiting in the third quarter, Proche was the fourth receiving option for nearly half the game. He ultimately only saw six offensive snaps (eight percent), while also returning six punts for 55 yards on 10 special-teams snaps (45 percent). He will again be a candidate to be promoted to the active roster in Week 10 versus the Ravens.

  • Browns' James Proche: Promoted Saturday

The Browns elevated Proche to their active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

The fourth-year wideout has yet to appear in an NFL game this year, but he signed with Cleveland's practice squad earlier in the week and has been promoted ahead of Sunday's contest. Proche spent the last three seasons with Baltimore, recording 278 yards on 25 receptions.

  • James Proche: Joins Browns' practice squad

The Browns signed Proche to their practice squad Tuesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

Proche was cut by the Ravens at the end of training camp ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. Proche will work on getting up to speed with the offense's playbook and prepare for a chance to be called up to the active roster.

  • James Proche: Works out with New York

Proche had a tryout with the Giants on Tuesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

Proche was unable to secure a spot on the Ravens' roster during camp, but this was his second workout for a team since his departure Aug. 29, having previously worked out for the Jets on Wednesday. It's unclear if the Giants are interested in Proche for his receiving or return ability, or possibly both, but the team sustained no injuries to its receiving corps in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys.

  • James Proche: Works out with New York

Proche participated in a workout with the Jets on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Proche was waived by the Ravens after putting up just four catches for 34 yards in three preseason games while nursing a hip injury. He didn't show much production in three years with Baltimore but is hoping that a change of scenery can help turn things around.
