Preparing a budget for a salary cap draft (otherwise known as an auction) is a net benefit. It spares you from the sort of emotional or reactive bidding that can lead to a lineup riddled with holes. It gives you an outline to optimize your return on investment at every position -- if you do it right, anyway.

But there's a downside to those preparations. They rely on everyone else following the script -- on them bidding on the players they're supposed to in the amounts they're supposed to. If your plan is too rigid, you'll be forced to scrap it, and then you're back to flying by the seat of your pants, bidding aimlessly and recklessly. The key is knowing how to pivot when it's inevitably required of you. 

I made such a pivot early in our latest salary cap draft for a 12-team Rotisserie league. My precious plan called for me to draft two first round-caliber bats in the $35 range. It didn't matter which ones, but I presumed the big base-stealers would be priced out of my range. Turns out the non base-stealers were, too. 

Trea Turner garnered the top bid at $49, followed by Jose Ramirez at $46, Juan Soto at $44, Vladimir Guerrero at $43 and Bryce Harper and Mike Trout both at $41. Bo Bichette went for $40 and Mookie Betts, Kyle Tucker and Ronald Acuna all for $38. I did give some thought to pushing Shohei Ohtani to $38 or Freddie Freeman to $37 -- both over budget still, but not by as much -- but since they were nominated before some of those others, it wasn't clear at the time that I needed to. I did finally land Rafael Devers for $35, recognizing that he was the last hitter who could pass as a part of that group, but at that point, all the talent I had budgeted for was gone. The dollars remained.

So how should I redistribute them? A little here, a little there, it turns out. I went a little over budget at shortstop for Fernando Tatis ($17), a player who should deliver those first round-caliber numbers for the final two-thirds of the season once he's recovered from wrist surgery. I went a few extra dollars to take advantage of a discounted Zack Wheeler ($24), a higher-end starting pitcher than I had intended to target. I splurged for Daulton Varsho ($10) to pair with my highest-priority pick, Salvador Perez ($32), for a dreamy catcher tandem that will blow away what anyone else has at the position.

(Seriously, if the Diamondbacks' plan is to make Varsho their everyday center fielder, playing only occasionally at catcher, how much is he going to stand out at that position -- and with stolen bases to boot?)

But above all, my plan to redistribute those unspent dollars meant waiting for the discounts that would inevitably result from the first-round types (and anyone else who was nominated early) going for more than they should. Some of my favorite rewards for this exercise in patience include Javier Baez ($15), Yu Darvish ($13), Jonathan India ($9) and Nathan Eovaldi ($6).

A few quick observations before we get to the results:

  • OK, this one isn't so quick. There was a terrible moment late in the draft when catcher Sean Murphy, of Oakland, was nominated. My brain took a shortcut and read it as pitcher Sean Manaea, also of Oakland, which led to me immediately jumping the bid to $3. This was after I had already filled my catcher spots with Perez and Varsho, remember, so yeah, there's my DH. I pleaded with the rest of the league to let me redo it since it was an obvious mistake (and literally dozens of other bids were redone for a variety of reasons), but they were mean and said no. Fortunately, I rectified the situation before the draft was even over by agreeing to trade Murphy and Avisail Garcia ($1) for Brendan Rodgers ($3), but yeah, lesson learned.
  • Or was it? Turns out I made the exact same mistake a little bit later, only I didn't realize it until long after anything could be done about it. Someone had nominated Alex Colome, the Rockies closer, but my brain took the same shortcut and read it as Alex Cobb, the Giants starting pitcher. I didn't question it until the reserve rounds, after the auction portion had ended, when Cobb was still listed as available. Was it a bug? Nope, just the one in my head. As important as it is to jump in quickly with that $2 or $3 bid during the endgame, you can't neglect to read the names in full.
  • One oddity in this particular draft was the distribution of closer values. The most high-end were reasonably priced (Josh Hader for $19, for instance) relative to the mid-tier guys (Jordan Romano for $15 stands out). Meanwhile, relative bottom-feeders like Taylor Rogers ($10) and David Bednar ($8) saw their prices elevated just by virtue of when they were nominated (i.e., early). It's like we all decided that while we wanted saves, we weren't so concerned with the quality of the pitcher providing them. I went my usual thrifty route, spending a combined $5 on Andrew Kittredge, Colome, Robert Suarez and Chris Stratton, the latter two coming in the reserve draft.
  • Some of my favorite winning bids by people other than myself include Kevin Gausman ($21), Jose Altuve ($19), Jose Abreu (15), Dansby Swanson ($5) and Hunter Renfroe ($4).
  • Tigers prospects Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene, who've been rising the rankings amid hopes of them making the opening day roster, each went for $7, though it's worth pointing out that they were nominated early. The Cubs' Seiya Suzuki, meanwhile, went for the fairly ridiculous sum of $22.
