Avelino signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs on Friday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
The 25-year-old was cut by the Giants late in 2019 and was unable to latch on with a new team last season. Avelino had a .759 OPS at Triple-A in 2019 and provides organizational depth at shortstop for Chicago.
