Castro was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Castro was reportedly a favorite to earn a spot in the Giants' bullpen as a bulk reliever, but he'll ultimately begin the year in the minors. The right-hander was effective during the 2021 campaign, posting a 2.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 44 innings across 30 appearances at the Triple-A level before tossing 13.1 scoreless innings across his first 10 big-league appearances. As long as those strong results continue in Sacramento in 2022, it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin the Giants at some point.
