Owens was scratched from a scheduled start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday so that he can be called up to pitch for Boston on Sunday, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. He'll be filling in for Eduardo Rodriguez, who reported that he's not fully confident in his injured hamstring.
Owens had a disastrous three-game stint in Boston early this season -- seven runs, 13 hits, 13 walks in 12.1 innings -- but has pitched well for the PawSox of late. Command remains a huge bugaboo for the left-hander, who has walked 74 batters in 119.1 minor league innings, nearly six BB per nine innings. The good news is that Owens is holding opponents to a .219 batting average and he's coming off a four-game stretch in which he's allowed four runs while striking out 29 in 23 innings. This is meant to be a one-time gig, but could be more if Rodriguez can't develop confidence in his injured hamstring. It's also a pretty important start for Owens, whose prospect value has taken a hit because of his command woes.
