Hernandez was added to the Red Sox's 60-man player pool.
Hernandez, who is not on the 40-man roster, has been an organizational soldier since joining the Red Sox from the Cubs in 2015 as the player to be named later in the Felix Doubront deal. After a 2017 shoulder injury lingered and wiped out 2018, Hernandez returned for 2019 and saw action in 61 games for the Red Sox. The 27-year-old utility infielder profiles as an average defender and doesn't hit enough to make up for that. For this pandemic-shortened season, he'll be insurance against a spate of infield injuries at second base, shortstop or third base.
