Melendez was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Despite standing out as one of Kansas City's top prospects, Melendez didn't make the cut for the Opening Day roster. He'll start the year at Triple-A Omaha, where he slashed .293/.413/.620 with 13 homers, 37 RBI and one stolen base over 44 games a season ago.
