  • Rockies' Jimmy Herget: Serving as opener

The Rockies will deploy Herget as an opener Tuesday against the Padres, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The right-hander will pick up his third start of the season as an opener Tuesday, with Chase Dollander expected to follow in the bulk role. Herget has primary worked as a high-leverage arm for Colorado this season with three holds and a save, and he's been effective with a 1.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB over 11 innings. He won't have any fantasy relevance Tuesday while working as an opener, however.

  • Rockies' Jimmy Herget: Serving as opener Thursday

Herget will be the Rockies' opening pitcher in Thursday's game at San Diego. The Rockies aren't revealing their pitching plans for Thursday post-Herget, but Chase Dollander is likely to cover the bulk of the innings. Herget is off to a fine start this season, yielding just one run with a 6:0 K:BB over six innings.

  • Rockies' Jimmy Herget: First save of season

Herget earned the save Wednesday against the Rockies after pitching a scoreless 10th inning. Herget stepped up to the mound with the Rockies holding a 2-1 lead and got the job done, needing 16 pitches (12 strikes) to retire George Springer, Nathan Lukes and Vladimir Guerrero. It's the first save since 2022 for Herget, who isn't expected to see regular save chances this year. The right-hander has yet to allow a run in three outings this season, giving up two hits with no walks and fanning three across three innings.

The Rockies and Herget avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Thursday. The sidearmer held a 2.48 ERA and 81:26 K:BB over 83.1 innings for Colorado last season, and the team has discussed the possibility of stretching him out to be a starting pitcher this spring.

The Cubs designated Herget for assignment Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Rob Zastryzny, who was claimed off waivers. Herget himself was a waiver claim of the Cubs but never made an appearance for them.

  • Cubs' Jimmy Herget: Claimed by North Siders

The Cubs claimed Herget off waivers from Atlanta and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Herget made eight appearances for Atlanta and posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 12.1 major-league innings before being designated for assignment. Atlanta reinstated Herget (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Saturday.
