Gilbert will be shut down from throwing for about a week to allow his shoulder to heal. The Giants don't seem to be too concerned about his injury, which is a good sign that he won't open the regular season on the injured list.

  Gilbert went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 15-8 win over the Orioles. Gilbert lined his first double to right field in the third inning, driving in a run. He later reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh before coming around to score. The 24-year-old added another double in the ninth. This marked his second big-league outing with multiple hits and multiple RBI. Over 15 games, Gilbert is slashing .139/.139/.278 with four RBI, two runs scored, two doubles, one homer and one stolen base across 36 plate appearances.

  Gilbert went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Sunday's 7-1 win against Tampa Bay. The rookie outfielder garnered the start in right field and logged his first long ball with a 384-foot solo shot off Rays reliever Mason Englert in the seventh. Gilbert then returned in the eighth to knock home an additional run on a single. The first 22 plate appearances of the 24-year-old's career have been rough with a .136/.136/.237 slash line and six strikeouts, as he entered Sunday with just one hit. Gilbert is currently stuck in a part-time role, but perhaps this performance can gain him additional playing time.

Since coming over to the Giants organization as part of the trade that sent Tyler Rogers to the Mets, Gilbert has gone a cool 7-for-14 with two RBI, three runs scored and two steals over five games at Sacramento. With Jerar Encarnacion (hamstring) headed to the injured list, the 24-year-old Gilbert will now receive his first opportunity to prove himself in the majors while starting in right field against the Nationals on Friday. Daniel Johnson was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

• Mets' Drew Gilbert: Shipped to Mets in Verlander deal

  Gilbert was traded from the Astros to the Mets on Tuesday along with at least one other prospect in exchange for Justin Verlander, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Netting Gilbert in return for Verlander is a nice piece of business for the Mets, as the 22-year-old center fielder is the Astros' best prospect. He dominated at High-A earlier this season (192 wRC+), in part because he was old for the level and playing half his games in the hitter-friendly park in Asheville. Gilbert has been less prolific at Double-A Corpus Christi, slashing .241/.342/.371 with six home runs and six steals, although he has heated up of late, batting .293 with five home runs and a 17.1 percent strikeout rate over his last 99 at-bats. Down the road, Gilbert has a chance to be a leadoff or No. 2 hitter who contributes in all five standard rotisserie categories. He could reach the majors sometime next season.
