Dodgers' Will Smith: Checks out well after swinging bat

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Smith (hand) responded well to taking swings in the batting cage Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

The Dodgers aren't closing the door on Smith being available for the team's three-game wild-card series that begins Tuesday, but Roberts noted that the catcher's availability would be contingent on him taking live at-bats Monday without issue. If the Dodgers opt to hold Smith out for the opening round of the playoffs, Ben Rortvedt and Dalton Rushing would serve as their options behind the plate. Smith has been on the shelf since Sept. 13 due to a hairline fracture in his right hand.

  • Brewers' William Contreras: Receiving afternoon off

Contreras is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

With the Brewers having secured baseball's top record heading into the regular-season finale, Contreras will receive a second straight day off ahead of what Milwaukee hopes will be an extended playoff run. Danny Jansen will handle catching duties for Milwaukee.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Idle for regular-season finale

Stephenson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.

Stephenson will receive a breather for the regular-season finale after he started behind the plate the last two days. Jose Trevino will handle catching duties Sunday.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Sitting in Game 162

Realmuto is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins.

Realmuto will get the day off for the Phillies' regular-season finale. Assuming the catcher remains on the bench for the contest, he'll head into the playoffs with a .257/.315/.384 slash line, 12 home runs, 52 RBI and 57 runs scored across 549 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Taking seat Sunday

Moreno is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.

Moreno is absent from the starting nine for Arizona's regular-season finale. Ketel Marte will DH while James McCann handles catching duties. Assuming Moreno doesn't enter off the bench, he'll finish the season with a .286/.352/.435 slash line, nine home runs, 44 runs scored and 40 RBI across 307 plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Dalton Rushing: Opens scoring with homer

Rushing went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Mariners.

Rushing went deep off Logan Gilbert in the fifth inning to open the scoring. Since returning from a shin injury Sept. 16, Rushing has gone 5-for-19 (.263) over seven games while sharing the catching duties with Ben Rortvedt. Rushing is now slashing .200/.255/.314 with four homers, 24 RBI, 14 runs scored and four doubles over 52 big-league games this season. Rortvedt has been steady while hitting .244 in September, and as the more experienced catcher, he may continue to see a starting role in the postseason unless Will Smith (hand) is able to return.

  • Henry Davis RF | PIT

Pirates' Henry Davis: Tallies seventh homer

Davis went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday against Atlanta.

Davis got the scoring going for the Pirates in the third inning with his seventh home run of the season. While he has improved considerably behind the plate, he's managed only a 41 wRC+ and .230 wOBA across 283 plate appearances. Davis is splitting time with Joey Bart to end the season, though he'll likely face additional competition for playing time from Rafael Flores to begin 2026.

  • Hunter Goodman RF | COL

Rockies' Hunter Goodman: Smacks 31st homer

Goodman went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run Saturday against the Giants.

Goodman went yard in the first inning to deliver his 31st homer of the season, five which have come in September. He's hit .292 with 15 RBI and 10 runs scored across 23 games for the month, ending his breakout campaign in strong form.

  • Ben Rortvedt C | CIN

Dodgers' Ben Rortvedt: Riding bench Saturday

Rortvedt isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Seattle.

Rortvedt will head to the bench Saturday after going 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts in Friday's series opener. Dalton Rushing will start behind the plate instead and bat ninth.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Taking seat Saturday

Fermin isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Arizona.

Fermin will get a chance to regroup Saturday after going 0-for-10 with a walk and a run scored over his last three contests. Elias Diaz will bat ninth while catching for starter Michael King.
