Draft Preview: Feeling a draft
Kevin Garnett was selected with the first overall pick of the CBS SportsLine.com Fantasy Basketball Expert's draft. Review where other players were picked, including last year's top rookies LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.
The Fantasy Basketball drafting season is upon us!
CBS SportsLine.com held its first Fantasy Basketball expert's draft of the season on Thursday, Oct. 7. Twelve owners, 14 rounds, and plenty of surprises made this an interesting 2004-05 debut draft.
Greg Bromberg, Michael Fabiano, David Gonos, Matt Lawrence and Alex Riethmiller represent SportsLine and Thomas Tighe defends his title from last season for Westwood One. Also competing this season, Steve Alexander of RotoWorld.com, Ken Bikoff of Basketball News magazine, Tom Carpenter of RotoTimes.com, Jeff Erickson of RotoWire.com, Dave Gawron of CreativeSports.com and Jeff Murison of Yahoo! Sports.
This is a Head-to-Head league with nine active roster spots: Three Guards, three Forwards and two Centers, with one swingman (Guard or Forward). Five reserves are also allowed with two extra in-season roster spots for players on the injured list. The draft lasted 14 rounds.
Scoring counted one point for a point scored, two points for an assist or rebound and 2.5 points for a block or steal.
Erickson shocked no one when he drafted Kevin Garnett with the first pick. And Shaquille O'Neal didn't last long as Riethmiller grabbed the new South Florida center with the second overall pick.
Some more interesting picks include last season's top rookies going in the first round as LeBron James (sixth) and Carmelo Anthony (10th) are apparently expected to have even bigger sophomore seasons.
Alexander expects a huge season out of Sixers center Samuel Dalembert, whom he drafted with the second pick of the fourth round. Over the last seven games of the 2003-04 regular season, Dalembert averaged 12.3 PPG, 12.4 RPG and 4.4 BPG.
Creative Sports drafted one of this season's top rookies, Emeka Okafor, with the 10th pick in the sixth round. Gawron also selected Chicago rookie guard Ben Gordon with the eighth pick of the 10th round.
The No. 1 overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, Dwight Howard, was picked up three selections later by RotoWire at the start of the ninth round.
