Zeller, according to new head coach James Borrego, will compete for a starting role during training camp along with the rest of the team besides Kemba Walker, Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer reports. After not making it past the first round of the playoffs each of the past five years with Steve Clifford at the helm, Borrego is exploring other options for the Hornets' rotation. Zeller had been Charlotte's usual at center from 2014-15 until last year, when Dwight Howard took over that role. With Howard now on the Wizards, Zeller will have an opportunity to take back the starting job. However, it won't be handed to him, as he'll have to compete with the likes of Willy Hernangomez, Bismack Biyombo and Frank Kaminsky. Each player offers significantly different skillsets, so it's possible minutes will fluctuate on a night-to-night basis.
Zeller underwent another MRI on his left knee, which revealed no new concerns, Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer reports. He plans on resuming activity after three or four weeks. Zeller ended up only seeing action in 33 games this season due to a left knee injury, averaging 7.1 points and 5.4 rebounds in 19.0 minutes while acting as Dwight Howard's backup. It doesn't appear the injury will drag too long into the offseason, however, as he should be back working out by mid-May.
Zeller (knee) has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2017-18 season, Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer reports. Zeller has played in a total of 33 games this season, most recently being hampered by a left knee injury that's costed him the last month of action. With just four games left on the schedule following Sunday's contest, coach Steve Clifford said there was no point in bringing Zeller back and risking further damage to the knee, so he's been shut down and will now have the offseason to make a full recovery. In his small sample size of games, Zeller finished the season with averages of 7.1 points and 5.4 rebounds across 19.0 minutes. He'll be back in Charlotte next year, with the Hornets on the hook to give Zeller $13.5 million in 2018-19. That said, Dwight Howard will also be back and figures to remain the starter at center, which should keep Zeller in a bench role.
Zeller (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the 76ers. Zeller has been out since the start of March with a lingering left knee injury and with just four games left on the regular-season schedule following Sunday's contest, there's a chance he doesn't take the floor again this season. As a result, Willy Hernangomez should continue to see added run behind Dwight Howard at center. Look for Zeller to once again be reevaluated prior to Tuesday's matchup with the Bulls.
Zeller (knee) is out for Saturday's game against the Wizards. As expected, Zeller will not be able to take the floor Saturday as he continues to nurse a knee injury. It was acknowledged earlier in the week that he could need several weeks of rest before the soreness and swelling dissipates, but the team will keep him listed as day-to-day for the time being. While Zeller is on the shelf, Willy Hernangomez should continue seeing reserve run at center behind starter Dwight Howard.
