Welsh signed a contract with the Hornets on Friday. Welsh was selected by the Nuggets near the end of the second round of last year's draft and spent most of his rookie season in the G League where he averaged 10.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He was waived by the Nuggets just over a week ago and now will get an opportunity to crack a rebuilding Charlotte team's final roster.
Welsh was waived by the Nuggets on Tuesday, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports. Welsh played just 36 minutes for the Nuggets last season, spending most of his time in the G League, where he averaged 10.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 23.0 minutes. He also played in the 2019 summer league with Denver, but posted just 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game.
Welsh totaled 11 points (5-7 FG, 1-2 3Pt), eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks across 28 minutes during the Nuggets' 95-82 loss to the Celtics in a Las Vegas Summer League game Tuesday. The second-year center showed well in extended playing time Tuesday after having seeing a more modest 16 minutes during his first game in Las Vegas. Welsh logged 11 games of regular-season action last season as a rookie, averaging just 3.3 minutes over those contests. The 2018 second-round pick did also see 20 games of G League action and will look to continue making a strong impression for what remains of summer league play.
Welsh was recalled from the G League on Friday. Welsh will join the Nuggets for Friday's road game against the 76ers but is not expected to see the floor unless the game gets away from either team late.
Welsh was assigned to the Iowa Wolves of the G League on Monday. Welsh has appeared in just one game for the Nuggets in January, so he'll head back to the G League for some more consistent run. Across 14 games in the G League, Welsh is averaging 11.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24.2 minutes.
